Under a sky of grayest steel,
There are streets of bone
Where death rides on flaming wheels.
His face is my own.
A million men I have killed,
All crying alone.
I drink the wine of cries
As I drift from home to home.
At funerals I smile wide,
Pleased to have made my mark.
And the empty souls run and hide
To where I eat them in the dark.

I do not wear this scarf because you gave it to me,
Although that would be reason enough,
If you had.
No, the warmth it leaves draped across my shoulders
Does not remind me of your breath on my back.
Neither does its color bring to mind
The fastening grip of your eyes.
And I try not to imagine the gentle stroke of your loving hand
From a dream remembered,
When I caress my face against the silk.
But as I pull it from around my neck,
And as it slips to the floor,
I am reminded of how quickly you will be lost to me,
And of how we are no more real
Than the roses printed on it.
