When Louis Elbel wrote t Michigan's fight song in 1898, he must have been predicting the success of Michigan athletics. While Lhe Wolverines were not the~ "whampions of the West" during the 1991-92 season, eight teams won their conference championships. Here's a look at those teams and others. And remember to learn those words before the football team's home opener. GYMNASTICS2 Both the men's and women's gymnastics teams celebrated their best seasons ever last year. While the men's team finished in the middle of the pack, rookie Beth Wymer led the women to their first Big Ten Championship. *BASKETBALL Jimmy King (pictured) and the Fab Five led the Wolverines one step away from a National Championship after a third-place Big Ten finish. FOOTBALL 4 The Wolverines continued their reign over the Big Ten and the hearts of Maize and Blue fans everywhere. Desmond Howard's breathtaking catches and runs added extra "Magic" to the spectacular season. HOCKEY 5 All-American Denny Felsner led the Michigan icers to their first CCHA championship. The Wolverines also qualified for the NCAA Final Four. ASKETBALL 6 Despite a disappointing season, a breath of hope comes to the Wolverines in the form of new coach Trish Roberts. S 0C CE R 0Michigan excels not only at varsity sports. The women's soccer club won the Big Ten title last season. SWIMMING 8 The Wolverines continued their dominance over the Big Ten. The men won their seventh consecutive title last year, and the women took their sixth.
