The Michigan Daily- Friday, November 6, 1992 -Page 11 Tough Penn State, OSU await Blue volleyball by Scott Burton In what promises to be an exciting weekend at Cliff Keen arena, the Michigan women's volley- ball team takes on two nationally-ranked Big Ten teams in Penn State and Ohio State. These matchups could have heavy playoff im- plications for the Wolverines, who are looking for their first upset of a top-20 squad this year. Al- though its regional ranking of seven should be good enough to qualify Michigan for the playoffs, a victory against a team of the caliber of Penn State or Ohio State would look extremely impres- sive to the selection committees. But any victory this weekend for the Wolver- ines will probably have to come without the ser- vices of top outside hitter Michelle Horrigan. She is still suffering from a leg injury that kept her out of Tuesday's action with Notre Dame. Senior out- side hitter Hayley Lorenzen will also be out of the lineup. Despite the absence of Horrigan and Lorenzen, the Wolverines remain confident they can knock off the upcoming heavyweights. "It's going to take mental toughness, but even without Michelle and Hayley, we definitely feel we can win these matches," sophomore Julie Scherer said. "I expect us to win at least one of the matches. We are capable of pulling any games out - we can be an awesome team." The first match this weekend for the Wolver- ines is against No. 9 Penn State Friday night. Be- hind fourteenth-year coach Russ Rose, the Nittany Lions have flourished in their second year in the league. They carry a 13-match Big Ten win streak and a first-place standing into Friday's contest. Penn State beat Michigan in State College earlier in the year, 15-4, 15-10, 15-7. Equally formidable for the Wolverines will be No. 22 Ohio State Saturday night. Big Ten coach of the year Jim Stone has seen his team struggle in some league contests this year, but it has played well enough for an 8-4 record and a third-place standing in the conference. The Buckeyes knocked off Michigan in Columbus earlier in the year, 13-15, 22-20, 15-7, 15-12.
