The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 6, 1992- Page 7 Clinton presidency could help Detroit DETROIT (AP) - Bill Clinton's presidency should translate to mil- lions of dollars in federal projects and jobs for the Detroit area, say political analysts and city officials. "For Detroit, a Clinton adminis- tration means happy days are here again," City Councilmember Clyde Cleveland said. "The important thing is we'll have an administration more willing to deal with the problems of cities," said mayoral spokesperson Robert Berg. "And presumably, getting a 268,000-vote margin out of Detroit isn't going to hurt." The Clinton presidency "means Detroit will get the Defense Department facility and I'm hopeful it will mean more money for low-in- cpme housing, urban development aid more police officers walking the teat," Cleveland said, referring to efforts to land the defense office * uilding complex downtown. * Federal officials have said the winners of a national-competition for several regional defense complexes Dousing 4,000 to 7,000 employees tach will be announced next year. a Detroit political consultant Mario vtorrow agreed that the nation's eventh-largest city will gain with Democrats in the White House. "Coleman Young is actually go- ng to be a powerful player," Morrow said of the mayor. "He de- livered Detroit ... for Gov. Clinton. any time you can hold back votes ind pull out votes, you're espected." A Democratic White House is -agerly awaited by Paul Hubbard, * resident of New Detroit Inc., an ivic activism group founded after .Detroit's 1967 riots. "I'm optimistic that it will mean ,attention paid to the problems of Detroit and other cities," he said, ;adding he believes Clinton will focus ion cities' troubled 18- to 35-year- +olds. - "I asked him and he indicated *that he thought I was right, this pop- clation has the most social prob- lems," Hubbard said yesterday. "The previous administration put time into foreign countries and let this popu- lation go uncared for." Councilmember Mel Ravitz said Clinton's promise to build up the pation's infrastructure could mean millions of dollars for repairs to Detroit streets, for the city's water Ond sewer system and for public fighting. But he warned that to do all that, Clinton must "put his finances in or- der and get congressional support to shift money back into assisting pities." 5THi AVE.
