The Michigan Daily-Weekend etc. - November 5, 1992 - Page 7 i l r I [ i il 14 i I I NWT! .. r ftW .. _ _.. M I FILMS OPENING FRIDAY: JENNIFER 8 Andy Garcia (just in that lame dog "Hero") is some kind of cop in a detective thriller, not exactly a career departure for the star of "Internal Affairs," "The Untouchables," and "Black Rain." Uma Thurman, so cool in "Henry and June," and John Malkovich co-star. At Briarwood: 10, 12:15, 2:40, 5, 7:30, 9:55, 12:10. At Showcase: 1:15, 4:15, 7:15, 10, 12:30. PASSENGER 57 Numbers seem to be very big in movie titles this week. This one's starring Wesley Snipes as some kind of cop in an action thriller. Why bother? Why ask why? Why? At Briarwood: 10:05, 11:50, 1:45, 4, 7:15, 9:15, 11:15. At Showcase: 12:55, 3:05, 5:15, 7:35, 9:55, 11:55. WATERLAND Uh-oh, another highbrow literary adaptation. Unlike the *recent spate of books made into movies, however, this one's supposed to suck big time. Still, if you like Jeremy Irons, you might like this one, and the guy who directed this did "A Killing in a Small Town" and "Paris Trout" on TV. At Showcase: 12:45, 2:55, 5:05, 7:25, 9:35, 11:35. "Jennifer 8" with John Malkovich and Andy Garcia starts Friday. *FILMS HOLDING: BEETHOVEN An auspicious beginning for the new State. At State Theater: 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday only. BoB ROBERTS We meant to catch this the first time around, but...At State Theater: 7, 9 CANDYMAN This horror flick is not only laughably bad, it's offensive. At Briarwood: 10:15, 12:45, 2:50, 7:40, 9:50, 11:50. At Showcase: 12:40, 3, 5:20, 7:55, 10:15, 12:25. CONSENTING ADULTS Director Alan J. Pakula ("Presumed Innocent") is presumed incompetent with this disastrously DePahna-esque thriller. Poor Kevin Spacey. At the Ann Arbor 1 & 2: 12:30, 2:45, 5, 7:10, 9:20. At Showcase: 12:50, 3:05, 5:20, 7:50, 10:05, 12:10 COOL WORLD David Bowie's on the soundtrack. We can't think of any other redeeming features to this animated debacle. At State Theater: 11 p.m. DR. GIGGLES Believe it or not, this silly horror flick is above average, as far as these things go. It's also Benny's finest performance yet, even better than his finger-chopping villain in "Darkman." At Biiarwood: 5. At Showcase: 2:30, 10:10, 12:10. GLENGARRY GLEN RoSs David (Dial 'F' for "Fucking") Mamet's play is just not meant to be a movie. Do you hear me? Do you hear me? Do you fucking hear me? (This is what is known as "rhythmic dialogue.") People who like this kind of thing are just trying to be pretentious. At Showcase: 12:30, 2:50, 5:10, 7:40, 9:55, 12:05. HERO This attempt to "make 'em like they used to" falls flat on its face, despite the noble efforts of Geena Davis, Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia. Rent a Frank Capra film instead. This will make you retch. At Briarwood: 10, 2:40, 7:25. At Showcase: 12, 4:25, 7:05. .THE LAST OF THE MOHIcANS Daniel Day Lewis becomes a 18th-century stud in this truly exciting film of Cooper's long-winded novel. Two thumbs up, way up. At Briarwood: 10, 12:10, 2:25, 4:40, 7, 9:30, 11:45. At Showcase: 1:30, 4:15, 7:10, 9:40, 12. THE MIGHTY DUCKS Emilio Estevez continues his downward spiral since the great "Repo Man" with this "Bad News Bears" meets "Slapshot" schlock. At Briarwood: 10:15, 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, 7, 9, 11:30. At Showcase: 12:10, 2:30, 4:50, 7:05, 9:20, 11:30. NIGHT AND THE CITY We hate Robert DeNiro remakes of old movies and Irwin Winkler's lame attempts to direct movies instead of producing them. Remember "Guilty by Suspicion?" We thought not. At Showcase: 2:20, 9:35, 11:45. OF MICE AND MEN Gary Sinise, founder of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre, stars (in a wonderfully understated performance) and directs this highly successful Steinbeck adaptation. Malkovich goes over the top, but that doesn't do too much damage to the proceedings. Sherilyn Fenn ("Twin Peaks" the TV show, not the lame movie) is also along for the ride. At Showcase: 1:25, 4:10, 7:15, 9:45, 12:05. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Robert Redford hits a home run with his third directorial effort, the only recent movie besides "Howards End" and o"Husbands and Wives" that deserves the oft-misused adjective, "great." See it again and again. The "it" of the title is the wonderful down home country of Montana where normal wholesome families once existed (no, it's not our backyard). At Ann Arbor 1 & 2: 12, 2:20, 4:45, 7:25, 9:55; at Showcase: 1:35, 4:15, 7:10, 9:50, 12:20. RoCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOw No advance screening; not yet re- viewed. At Briarwood: 12 midnight. SISTER Acr Whoopi Goldberg makes a lot of money. At State Theater: 2, 7, 9:15. SNEAKERS Robert Redford ought to stay behind the camera. His "A River Runs Through It" has finally arrived. Go see that instead of this weak thriller. At Briarwood: 12:20, 4:55, 9:40. At Showcase: 12,4:30, 7:25. UNDER SIEGE Steven Seagal ("Above the Law," "Hard to Kill") makes a major break with the past with this two-word title. Tommy Lee Jones delivers the line of the year: "This is not the work of a cook." We can honestly call this Seagal's best work to date; interpret that however you wish. At Briarwood: 10, 12, 2:10, 4:15, 7, 9:10, 11:45. At Showcase: 12:40, 2:55, 5:10, 7:45, 10:10, 12:20. WAYNE'S WORLD You haven't seen this yet? At State Theater: 11:15 P.M. ZEBRAHEAD Filmed in Motown, this movie was produced by Oliver Stone and it's not half bad, featuring beautiful (?) cinematography.
