Page 12-The Michigan Daily- Friday, October 30, 1992 Hose's hat trick ends stickers' losing streak, by Brett Johnson Daily Sports Writer Trifecta. That was' the word of the night at Oosterbaan Field House yesterday. The Michigan field hockey team (2-4 Big Ten, 7-7 overall) faced the University of the Pacific and came away with a much needed 5-3 win. The Wolverines were led by their top two scorers - Kalli Hose and Katie Thomas. Hose came up with her first career hat trick, and Thomas added three points, including one goal. After a month-long hiatus from the win column, Wolverine coach Patti Smith was excited about the win. "I was really glad to get a win," Smith said. "Finally, the spell is bro- ken. This was a really good confi- dence booster. We played strong as a team, and the first half was great." Michigan scored quickly as Hose put her first goal of the game past Tiger goalie Angela Teran. It came less than three minutes into the con- test and gave the team an early lead. Michigan dominated the first half allowing only one goal and four shots. "We played really well in the first half," Hose said. "It seemed really easy to play. We were really spread out and our spacing was good." Pacific tied the score at 1-1 with 23 minutes left in the first half. Less than a minute later, Hose put Michi- gan up for good on a direct corner. Hose took a pass from her sister Lelli and rocketed a shot into the Tiger net. Thomas also received an assist on the goal. "The corner didn't really work as it was supposed to," Kalli said. "It was supposed to go back to Katie (Thomas), but the pass was blocked off. Lelli dumped it in, and I was there. It's nice to make something work when it doesn't go as planned." After two Michigan goals, Hose was able to finish off her hat trick with less than two minutes left in the first period. "I had been in a slump and was sick last weekend," Hose said. "I'm pleased to be playing well again. When we're not scoring, I know I need to try to pick up the slack and help keep the pressure off the forwards." Thomas also had three points on the night. In addition to her assist on Hose's second goal, she assisted Jennifer Lupinski's goal and scored Michigan's third goal of the night. "It was impressive to see them (Hose and Thomas) step up," Smith said. "They made a good effort tonight." The team is now looking toward this weekend's home matches against Kent State and Boston College. The Michigan women's cross country team hopes to return home from the Big Ten champi- onship meet in Champaign celebrat- ing a victory. The seventh-ranked women har- riers left at 8 a.m. this morning on their way to Champaign and the Big Tens which are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Michigan is one of four teams in contention for the Big Ten crown. The others include defending cham- pion Wisconsin, Penn State and Iowa. Michigan coach Mike McGuire believes it will be "a heck of a meet.". "The athletes are progressing well and will be ready to go on Saturday," he said. "We have people who have been there before and can help the team with their experience." The team will feel a definite loss due to the injury of all-American Amy Bucholz. Bucholz injured her knee and was listed day-to-day throughout the week, but will be un- able to run. The team will miss Bucholz, but McGuire thinks the Wolverines can handle it. "Filling in for Bucholz is a tall order to fill," he said. "Anytime you take an all-American out of the line- up, you're going to miss them. But I'm confident in whatever team we take to the Big Tens. We still have a lot of people to get it done on the course and the athletes feel the same way." Chris Szabo, who will be a major contributor on Saturday, agrees with McGuire. "We're going to miss Amy, but we knew all week that she might not be able to run," she said. "We have a lot of other talented people that can step up and get the job done." Even though Bucholz cannot run, she is supporting her teammates. The team enjoyed a pre-meet dinner at Cottage Inn to relax a little. Karen Harvey felt that was a must and states, "we're excited, but we're saving energy for the meet and trying to lay low." Jessica Kluge holds the same philosophy. "We just want to relax and fo- cus," she said. "We want to be ex- cited, controlled and ready to roll on Saturday." The Wolverines lineup includes Harvey, Szabo and Kluge. Molly McClimon, Courtney Babcock, Kelly Chard, Katy Holbacher, Molly Laurie and Mayre Richards finish out the roster. The team hopes to re- turn Saturday night able to celebrate. "It's unfortunate I can't run, but I'm playing it by ear," Bucholz said. "I want to be back as soon as possi- ble so I can help the team and get ready for Districts in two weeks. I'm trying not to let it get to me." The course to be run in Illinois is mainly flat, which will result in~ faster times. If the race is close, it could be decided at the wire. In preparation for this, workouts were tapered during practice. Szabo feels the team is ready. That winning streak belongs to nationally-ranked No. 3 Wisconsin, who will be looking for its eighth consecutive conference champi- onship. The Badgers dominated last year's championship meet by captur- ing the top three places and are heav- ily favored to win this year's race. No. 16 Penn State and No. 14 Michigan will pose the biggest threat to the Badgers. The championship will be held at the Savoy Golf Course in Cham- paign. The course is adjacent to an airfield. Therefore, there are no hills on the course. "The course is flat, like running on a track," Michigan coach Ron Warhurst said. "If it's windy that's going to change the tactics a little bit." Michigan needs a big improve- ment to stay near the lead with Wisconsin. "We can improve 15 to 20 per- cent, but you're not going to im- prove 70 to 80 percent in one week's time," said Warhurst. "I'd be a very happy person if we did." Leading the way for the Wolverines will be senior Matt Smith. Smith has already won three meets this year and will be looking to finish strong in Champaign. He finished 11th in last year's race. "We're not trying to dwell on any past races," said Smith. "We're just "Our mileage was cut back this. week and we've worked more on speed," Szabo said. "We're more rested and that will help us going in. If we run as well as we have in the past we should be fine. We have one of the best women's cross country going from Michigan in a long time. We have a lot of depth and we're . ready." bly Victory trying to go out there and do the best we can and have fun with it." Also competing for Michigan are senior Chris Childs, juniors Shawn Mackay and Jay Schemanske, sophomores Jim Finlayson, Ian Forsyth, Robert Lee and freshmen. Scott MacDonald and Theo Molla. "If everyone runs their race, we can win it," said Smith."We're just going to go out there and do what we can do and whatever happens,, happens." The sophomore and freshmen, runners, who compose two-thirds of the team going to Illinois, point to- ward a bright future for Michigan men's cross country. "These guys are going to be great," said Smith. "If they keep it up, they are going to be Big Ten Champions in the next couple of years. It's too bad I won't be here to see it." First, Smith and the rest of the* Wolverines will see what they can do about getting that championship this year. "We have this bottle of cham- pagne that's been traveling with us for three Big Ten Championships,". said Smith. "If it's not opened this year it's going to be passed on to one of the younger guys. It's been a great tradition the last couple of years, but wouldn't it be nice to open champagne in Champaign?" 5TH AVE.
