The Michigan men's soccer club is 6-9-3 and is coming off a 3-0 de- feat at the hands of Wisconsin- Milwaukee last Sunday. Still, the team is excited about this after- noon's match at Macomb Com- munity College and the upcoming Big Ten Club Tournament in two week-. "I'm looking forward to the Club Tournament," Michigan coach Aaron Smith said. "I really like our chances." The players are equally optimistic about the team's odds for this season. "I think if it's going to happen (winning the tournament), it'll hap- pen this year," junior Reza Sad- japour said. Despite injuries, misfortunes and a schedule bubbling over with na- tionally-ranked and varsity oppo- nents, Michigan's strong 3-0-1 showing against Big Ten foes this season is the reason for the team's optimism. What the final score against Wisconsin-Milwaukee didn't show was that Michigan was without an experienced goalie in the contest. Due to midterms, the regular goalies were unable to attend, and Smith inserted fullback Dave Costello in the net. Costello performed admirably, and Smith felt his team played very well. "We owned the first half," Costello said. "After 11 days off, I'm happy with the way we played." Despite the strong feelings the team holds for their chances in the Big Ten club tournament, there is some cause for concern. The recent lack of offense has the Wolverines focused on scoring some goals against the Monarchs today. "The last few practices we've been working on attacking the offen- sive third," Sadjapour said. Today's matchup is the squad's final chance to work out the kinks in its game before the tournament, and KRISTOFFER (3ILLET fE/Daily The men's soccer team hopes to turn its offense around today with its game against Macomb Community College. the team is counting on its leaders to pick up the team's offense. "The seniors will step up," Sadjapour said. "Guys like Dave Rindfusz, Guy Metzger and Kelly Kuehne (will contribute)." Junior Brian Rosewarne, who has tallied two goals and an assist in only three games since returning from an injury, will also be expected to continue his productivity. Monday, the fall tournament season came to a close as the team walked off the Stanford golf course and pre- pared for the snow and the cold of the Midwest. The Wolverines played their way to 12th place, which might seem disappointing, but considering the strength of the field, the results don't appear quite as poor. "This is the strongest field that we've ever seen," Michigan coach Jim Carras said. "There were 24 teams and at least five or six of them are ranked nationally. Most of the other teams were very good." One would not have to look too long to find the bright spot from this weekend's competition. Redshirt freshman Chris Brockway displayed veteran abilities in his first-ever tournament. He had the second lowest score (73-74-73) for the Wol- verines and finished 32nd overall. "It is usually tough to play on this level for the first time," Carras said. "Brockway did a real good job." Senior co-captain James Carson followed up last weekend's seventh- place finish with another solid per- formance. Carson shot well in all three rounds (74-67-72) and finished in fifth place. The 67 by Michigan's No. 1 man is the best score the team has seen all year. Bill Lyle, who played with Brockway at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, struggled for the sec- ond week in a row. He shot a 70 in the first round, but scrambled in the It will team hits be a long time until the the course again in the Lyle spring. The spring season consists of eight tournaments. Carson's fellow captain, Anthony Dietz (78- 80-81), could only manage a 79th- place showing. The final golfer for the Wolverines, Bob Henighan (76-74- 77), finished in 66th place in his second collegiate tournament. "I thought we played well in the first round," Carras said. "We slipped a little. We went from seventh to 10th to 12th. I am not really upset considering the field. I am very pleased with Chris Brockway's per- formance in his very first tourna- ment."
