The Michigan Daily -Sports Monday- October 19,1992 --Page 7 i Swimmers of all ages lead victory wave by Jaeson Rosenfeld Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's swim- ming team flexed its muscles in its first meet of the season at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines took the top three spots in four of seven races on their way to an 87-42 victory over arch-rival Michigan State. The meet, which featured events at twice their conventional distance, saw contributions by both young and old, with Wolverines from each class winning at least one race. Beth Jackson, a freshman from Cincinnati, picked up the victory in the 800-meter individual medley in a time of 11:13.66. Jackson is a member of a freshman class which will try to pick up the slack following the graduation of all- Americans Katherine Creighton, Jennifer Love, and Michelle Swix. After his first look at his recruiting class in meet competition, coach Jim Richardson was cautiously opti- mistic. "It doesn't appear that anyone is going to step out of the freshman class immediately," Richardson said. "I think there will be three or four Big Ten finalists by the time they're done." Lara Hooiveld and Alecia Humphrey led the sophomore class. Hooiveld contributed a top finish in the 400m breaststroke in 5:45.33. Humphrey bested the 400m back- stroke field in 4:52.28. Humphrey thought the double-distance format actually was to her advantage. "I like the 400 back. I am more of a middle-distance swimmer than a sprinter," Humphrey said. The sophomore then explained another advantage of the different format. "It tells you where you are in your training, because if you have a good base, you don't die." Humphrey said. "I think I am a lot further than last year." Junior Kathy Deibler garnered the 400m freestyle victory in 4:31.10. Classmate Kate Girard may have thought she was never going to leave the pool in a marathon 24:37.76 triumph in the 2000m free. Girard attributed her success to su- perior preparation. "This was our hardest week of training all year," Girard said. "We were pleased with how we swam." Senior Missy McCracken served double duty by winning the 400m butterfly and the 800m freestyle re- lay with teammates Deibler, Nicole Williamson, and Kirsten Silvester. Freshman Beth Jackson swims in the 800 IM against MSU. Jackson finished first with a time of 11:13.66. NiYo Continued from page 3 How true. This is the same Michael Jordan who punched center Will Perdue in practice because Per- due had the nerve to set a pick on his royal Airness. How dare you, Will? But Will was never chastised by Jordan the way some of his other teammates were. Remember when Jordan com- manded his teammates to stop pass- ing the ball to Bill Cartwright in the fourth quarter of games? Or when he *reportedly told Horace Grant that if he "wasn't so stupid" the team would have won more games? Grant had just as much to do with the Bulls winning a second title (or a first title, for that matter) as anyone. Now you tell me who's being stupid. The hard-working power for- ward, or the all-World guard who didn't show up to this year's training camp until last Friday? Because he was resting, Jordan said. That's why he wasn't in camp. Funny, he had enough energy to fly out to Califor- nia to tape some Nike ads while he was resting. Seriously. They don't keep stats in the pre- season. Michael Jordan knows that. Bo knows lots of things. Michael knows stats. Like when he sat out a game against Cleveland late last season af- ter coach Phil Jackson said he was only going to play him 15 or 20 minutes. Jordan refused, wouldn't play at all, because he didn't want to ruin his scoring average. Or how about when Jordan as- sumed the Bulls' point guard posi- tion for awhile, and his numbers rose. He turned a few triple-doubles. Do you know why? Because every game he checked with the scoring table during time-outs and dead-ball situations to see how close he was getting. Seriously. This guy is getting to be too much. And the fiasco of the $57,000 check is just the latest chapter. Will it be the last?
