Spikers look to improve in Big Ten

by Scott Burton
Though certainly not the caliber of last week's
matches with Ohio State and Penn State, the Michigan
women's volleyball team looks to this week's home
matches with Iowa and Minnesota with the same degree
of importance.
The Wolverines bring a 4-2 Big Ten record into this
weekend's matches with the hope of shrinking Penn
State's two-game conference lead by sweeping the con-
petition.
Crucial to a Wolverine victory this weekend will be
the re-establishment of their powerful front line -
something Penn State and Ohio State were able to stymie
to a degree.
Despite some struggles last week, the front line still
features the No. 1 player in the Big Ten in kills, Michelle
Horrigan, and overall the Wolverines are second in the
Big Ten in kill average.
In its match with Iowa Friday night, Michigan faces

last year's tenth-place finisher in the Big Ten. But with
their current .500 record, the Ilawkeyes are somewhat
improved from the team that lost twice to the
Wolverines last year.
Iowa's second-year coach Linda Schoenstedt directs
a young lineup with only one senior. That senior, juco
transfer Michelle Thompson, led last year's team in digs,
service aces and total blocks.
Saturday night, the Wolverines will have to thwart
the serving prowess of Minnesota, who last. year led the
Big Ten in service aces with 152. Behind all those aces,
the Golden Gophers finished with a solid 11-8 Big Ten
record - good for a fifth place finish.
Minnesota is tied for fourth in the Big Ten with a 4-2
record. The key to their success this year has been the
play of sophomore outside hitter Gretchen Dahl, who is
eighth in the Big Ten in hitting efficiency. Junior setter
Sue Jackson also has been a standout on the team, her
10.8 assists-per-game is fifth best in the Big Ten.

Water
poio hosts
weekend
tourney
by Erin Himstedt
The Canham Natatorium will be
the scene of non-stop water polo ac-
tion this weekend as the Michigan
men's water polo team takes on
Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State,
Indiana, Northwestern and others at
the 1992 Wolverine Invitational. All
totaled, nineteen matches will take
place.
As the team prepares for this
weekend, the Wolverine's only
home event of the season, coach
Scott Russell eyes the Spartans and
Wildcats as Michigan's strongest
challengers.
Northwestern finished second
behind Michigan in the Big Ten last
year, and defeated the Wolverines 7-
6 at Evanston last weekend. Never-
theless, Russell anticipates a victory
against the Wildcats tomorrow.
"I think Northwestern's going to
put up a good fight," Russell said.
"No game we play versus North
western is easy. I think the motiva-
tion of losing to them last week is
the motivation that we need."
Tonight's match against Mich-
igan State may be the Wolverine's
toughest battle of the weekend.
Michigan has already played the
Spartans once this season, narrowly
winning 16-15.
"I really think MSU is our prime
competition for the Big Ten chain-
pionship," Russell said. "They have
a tremendous team." Senior co-cap-
tain Glen Shilland agreed, but re-
mained confident.
"It'll be a pretty intense game,"
Shilland commented. "It should be a
good game, but we'll win."
Shilland sees Michigan's talent
and home pool advantage as a deci-
sive advantage, despite the team's
youth.
"We swim more than anyone in
the midwest," Shilland said. "So
we're in condition. We'll probably
win every game with no problem.
Talent wins over experience."
Matches begin tonight at 8 p.m.
with Michigan facing Michigan
State, and will continue Saturday
from 1to 11 p.m., and Sunday 8
a.m. to 12 p.m.
