It has been over a month since any Michigan players slept in foreign beds, and the team's record reflects that home cookin'. The Wolverines (2-0 Big Ten, 4- 0-1 overall) make their first foray out of Ann Arbor since the Sept. 12 opener at Notre Dame tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. (ABC-TV). The trip to Bloomington should present more of a test for the long unchallenged Wolverines than recent contests have. Indiana (1-1, 3-2) sits in sec- ond place in the conference - but so does just about every other school. The Hoosiers' ledger includes victories over a solid Missouri club and a rising Northwestern team, but also shows losses to Kentucky and Michigan State. Yes, Michigan State. That makes them a big under- dog to Michigan, but every Wol- verne opponent faces the same task. "We're going up against an ex- cellent football team," Indiana head coach Bill Mallory said. "We'll need to have a tremendous effort from our entire team to make this a competi- tive game." The Hoosiers are 2-0 at home, but Michigan is riding a 14-game winning and an 18-game unbeaten Big Ten road streak. However, the last time a Wolverine team lost a conference game away from Mich- igan Stadium was to these very Hoosiers, by a 14-10 score in 1987. Since then, of course, the Wol- verines have won four straight Big Ten titles. "I'm not saying going to Bloomington is going to be easy, but I think we need the road game," Michigan coach Gary Moeller said. "We've been at home too often. We need to go away, we need a new set- ting, we need a new challenge. We need to get out of our routine. "Four games on the road - or four games at home - is a long stretch." Michigan has steamrolled its first two Big Ten opponents by a com- bined 87-38 point total, and the club is averaging an even 40 points and 481 yards of total offense a game. The main problem for the Wol- verines the past few weeks has been a lack of fire during the second halves of games. Michigan is in the habit of opening up huge leads and then cruising to victory. "You always have to guard against (overconfidence), and we are out in front right now," Moeller said. "The only way for us to keep from staying in front is to stub our own toe. It will be emotional in every single game we go into, because ev- ery team that is going to play Michigan, this could be a big part of their season." Moeller will once again go with Tyrone Wheatley to start the game at tailback. The sophomore leads the Big Ten in rushing, scoring and all- purpose yardage. Junior Ricky Powers did not see action for the first time in his career last week, be- cause of an ankle injury, but is ex- pected to make his return this week. Indiana's main weapon is senior quarterback Trent Green, who has developed into a fine pro prospect.., The conference's third-leading pas-., ser a year ago, Green has thrown for,,, 1229 yards this season, but hi4, touchdown-to-interception ratio is 5-, r to-7. "He is more dangerous in the pocket throwing the ball but he has the ability to move. He can also hurt you with the option," Moeller said. "Now you're back to defending a lit- tle like Notre Dame." . Moeller pointed out that the- Hoosiers don't have a big-time run-. ;. 2-0 Big Ten, 1st place 4-0-1 Overall 28 : , ,, #P ner like the Irish's Jerome Bettis.;;, Indiana's top two tailbacks, sopho .' mores Brett Law and Jermaine Chaney, are both out with injuries;' and Mallory will have to rely on a- pair of redshirt freshmen to shoulder-' the ground game. Emmit Pride is the team's second-leading rusher with 230 yards, and Sean Glover will :" serve as backup. "We'll have to take ourselves up. a notch or two," Mallory said. "We ' haven't yet reached a level where we,- need to be. We have to mature and' come on." MICHELLE UUY/D Michigan linebacker Steve Morrison and the rest of the Wolverines will try to keep Indiana under wraps as they battle the Hoosiers this Saturday in Bloomington at 3:30. It is only the second away game for the team this season. Despite injuries to both teams, Michigan's talent outclasses Hoosiers by Josh Dubow Daily Football Writer QUARTERBACK: Entering the sea- son, Michigan's Elvis Grbac and Indiana's Trent Green were two of the top returning quarterbacks in the conference. Grbac has struggled so far this season. He missed two games b8cause of an ankle injury and has alteady thrown more interceptions (seven) this season than he did all of 1991. Indiana has gone to a possession style passing attack this year to try and limit the number of interceptions. However, Green has still thrown seven INTs thus far. With the loss of all-Big Ten running back Vaughn Dunbar, Green has been forced to pass more. He has thrown for over 220 yards per game this season. Neither player has played to his potential so far, but if Grbac ever does return to last year's level, he will be the best quarterback in the conference. Advantage: Michigan RUNNING BACKS: Michigan prob- ably has the deepest backfield in the nation. Sophomore Tyrone Wheatley has rushed for 396 yards rushing in the last two weeks. Wheatley is ranked eighth in the country in yards pergame. Michigan's other three tailbacks - Ed Davis, Ricky Powers and Jesse Johnson - have all rushed for over 200 yards this season. Powers is questionable again this weekend with an ankle sprain. Full- back Burnie Legette is also question- able with a banged up knee. If Legette can't get the nod, redshirt freshman Che Foster will start. The Wolverine ground attack as a whole is fifth in the nation with 281 yards per game. Indiana's Brett Law appeared to have filled Dunbar's shoes after a240- yard performance against Missouri. However, he has not approached that level since. Law will miss tomorrow's game with a shoulder injury. Emmitt Pride rushed for 85 yards last week against Northwestern and will start tomorrow. Advantage: Michigan WIDE RECEIVER: Both teams have talented receiving corps. Indiana is led by junior Thomas Lewis who has 28 catches and four touchdowns this sea- son. Eddie Baety and ScottMcGowan have 26 and 16 catches respectively. Michigan is led by multi-talented receiver Derrick Alexander. Last week, Alexander took a punt back 80 yards for a touchdown and scored on a reverse earlier in the season. Alexander has 23 receptions so far. Tight end Tony McGee is slowly becoming Michigan's money receiver. McGee has 16 catches and three touch- downs. Advantage: Indiana OFFENSIVE LINE: Michigan's offen- sive line has opened up huge holes for the running backs in recent weeks. The line has also provided Grbac with solid pass protection. Indiana's line has helped the run- ning game, but has allowed 18 sacks this season. Advantage: Michigan DEFENSIVE LINE: Michigan's de- fensive line has been stellar in recent weeks. The Wolverines have applied heavy pressure on opposing quarter- backs and held each of its last four opponents under 100 yards rushing. Indiana leads the Big Ten in sacks with 19. Lamar Mills has four sacks so far. Advantage: EVEN LINEBACKERS: Michigan's line- backers have been a stronghold for the defense of late. Marcus Walker and Steve Morrison led the team in tack- ling last week from the inside. Outside linebacker Matt Dyson has consis- tently pressured the quarterback this season. Also, defensive tackle Chris Hutchinson performed extremely well last week from the outside linebacker position. Inside linebacker Nate Holdren had ligament damage to his knee last week and will not play tomorrow. Holdren may miss the entire season. Hoosier outside linebacker Jay Davis has five sacks and 29 tackles this season. Middle linebacker Al Thurman leads the team in tackles with 41. A, , Z Z Advantage: Michigan SECONDARY: Michigan has one of the strongest secondaries in the con-=. ference. The Wolverines are No. 3 inm the conference in pass defense. Bu. teams have been forced to pass against Michigan because the Wolverines have jumped on top of their opponents early, The Hoosiers are No. 2 in the con- ference in pass defense. Advantage: Michigan ,.1 SPECIAL TEAMS: Michigan has a lethal return game with Alexander re- turning punts and Wheatley on kicks' However, Hoosier punter J44 DiGuilio leads the conference with a 46.6 yard average. Kicker Scott Bonnell has seven field goals this sea- son. 0 Advantage: Indiana 'I Wrgfessionaf _PassQges A Career Symposium for Graduate Students Saturday, October 24, 1992 - 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. FouRTH FLOOR, RACKHAM 01 Sessions Include The Academic Job Search Finding a Job in Your Field: Tips for a Successful Job Search U Personal and Professional Lives: A Balancing Act Getting Published * Making Conferences Work for You: Interviewing and Networking Balancing Teaching, Research and Service: Alternatives within Academe Building Connections and Establishing Support in Graduate School Career Alternatives: Finding the Right Fi- 0 Grant Proposal Wnting i Resumes & C.V.'s International Students: Job Search Strategies & Issues 0 i i i
