It's not like he's got to develop physically; he's already a man." There had been concerns that the Wolverines would have trouble land- ing big-name recruits this year. Because the Fab Five still have two years to play after this season, it was thought that players would be hesi- tant to join a program where playing time might be limited. However, Crawford indicated he was not wor- ried. "There'll only be two (actually four) guards returning next year," Crawford said. "And Jalen can play almost any position. I have to im- prove, and I'll get some minutes." Crawford only recently overcame an injury which reduced his playing and practice time the past two months. During the Phoenix National Tournament in early August, he was kneed in his left thigh, and calcium deposits built up when Crawford ignored the ailment. "It's fine now," Crawford said. "I went to rehabs and did some exer- cises to build my leg up. It's at 100 percent." Fisher and his staff cannot com- ment on any recruits until they re- ceive a signed national letter-of-in- tent. Water polo wades through weekend by Erin Himstedt Nobody likes to lose, but some- times a loss or a tie can be a valuable learning experience. The Michigan men's water polo team may have finished with a disappointing record last weekend at Northwestern, but it was definitely not discouraged. After soundly defeating Ohio State in their first game of the tour- nament, the Wolverines suffered losses to Northwestern and two non- collegiate Chicago teams. A tie with Wisconsin finished the weekend, bringing Michigan's season record to 9-4-1. Despite having a losing weekend; Michigan coach Scott Russell was pleased with the overall effort of his players. "Northwestern is always ex- tremely tough in their home pool, but we only lost by one point," Russell said. "I never like to lose, but I really like where we are at this point in the season." The Wolverines were missing several of their more-experienced players due to the GRE exam, yet the younger players rose to the challenge. "A lot of guys really stepped up ... it was a good learning tourna- ment," commented first-year student and starter Ben Ewy. "It says a lot about the level of depth on the team." Russell is looking forward to this weekend's Wolverine Invitational. "In spite of their age, (the players) have the ability to play very well together," Russell said. "I think we will be extremely difficult to beat in our home pool." The team battled against a tough 16-team field and ended the weekend with a solid third-place finish. The strong showing is even more im- pressive considering that the Wol- verines No. 1 golfer, Bill Lyle, had a troublesome time, placing 49th overall. Senior co-captain James Carson picked up the slack and led all Wolverine scorers with a 75.3 aver- age, good enough for seventh place. Michigan coach Jim Carras was very pleased with the play of his team. "We're getting much closer to what I think we are capable of," Carras said. "I've got some real good feelings about this team. If we play well again next week, I think people will notice that we are a good team." Going into the last round Carson (75-72-79) was only two shots off the pace and had a legitimate chance of winning the individual crown. In addition, the team was only down by nine heading into the final round. Considering that there were three highly-ranked teams in the tourna- ment (Kent State, the eventual win- ner, Ohio State and Colorado) the Wolverines have a right to be opti- mistic. Anthony Dietz (76-75-78), Bob Henighan (75-76-79), and Carl Condon (79-77-84) all turned in a solid performance for the team. Henighan finished 12th in his first outing of the year. ::1;>::W: ;>::;W;:::;: I::: ::I .Al rb.'a tT rnss. '12. .JLA W s l g o.......... . .~ ::::eiat:( .:.....
