Architecture senior Sean Lindblade shows his support for Michigan in a most unusual way during Saturday's game against Michigan State. The crowd of 106,788 that saw the Wolverines beat their intrastate rivals was the largest in NCAA history. Coleman 1 11 11.0 11 LIN Continued from page 1 game of the year. Hopefully we've gained some momentum and can finish out the season with another Big Ten title." McGee said he was grabbed by the face mask and was struggling to get out when the pushing and shov- ing started. As it turned out, he had not been ejected - only assessed a personal foul. And when he got back in there he was even more excited, he said, going after blocks with added aggression. "Some teams do as they have to do to try to win," McGee said. "But that's not the way we play - we have a different coach and a differ- ent program. Maybe that's the way they play. A good team has to be able to overcome those tactics." The Wolverines became very familiar with one of State's ploys early in the second quarter. On a second-and-goal from the one, Michigan jumped offside and was penalized five yards. One of the Spartans had called out Michigan's cadence. Quarterback Elvis Grbac was not amused. "I think that's cheap. For a team to do that, that's saying they can't play us man-to-man," Grbac said. "I just lost respect for them." Leave it to the fifth-year senior to make good copy. Grbac was by far the most vocal Wolverine following the game. He acknowledged his bra- gadocio was largely due to the fact he would never have to face the Spartans again, but his words prob- ably represented the true feelings of the team. "We wanted to come back and destroy them, rip them apart," he said. "We don't like Michigan State, they don't like us. We hate each other's guts. We just wanted to go out and try to beat them up as much as possible." The Wolverines did that in the first half, opening up a 28-0 lead be- fore the first Spartan score. But Michigan could not deliver the knockout blow in the second half. Wheatley eventually punched in a fifth touchdown for the final margin, but it was barely enough to satisfy the out-for-blood Grbac, who thought the Wolverines went a little easy on Michigan State. "I'm very disappointed. I think we should have scored a lot more points on them," he said. "But that score at the end was icing on the cake." Defensive lineman Chris Hutch- inson was more diplomatic, even with four stitches on his chin. He said there was much less talking in this year's game, largely because of the absence of Duane Young, a for- mer Spartan tight end notorious for his verbal attacks. The senior had a big game, with two sacks among his five tackles, but he appears to have mellowed in his old age. "I really wouldn't want to beat them real bad," he said. "But it would have been nice to cover the spread." There's always next week. Kickoff Returns Player No Yds Avg Lg Holman 3 56 18.7 20 S.
