Stickers face Lion of a test

by Jim Foss
Daily Sports Writer
Penn State represents a midterm
examination for the Michigan field
hockey team. The Wolverines are 6-
2 and playing well, but the Lady Li-
ons are ranked third in the country.
Michigan squares off against
Fenn State today in Ann Arbor at 4
p.m., and the Wolverines need to
perform well in this test if they hope
to be around during field hockey's
final exams - the NCAA Regionals
knd the NCAA Championships.
The Lady Lions are indeed a
formidable foe. They made the na-
tional semifinals of field hockey last
year, finishing third.

"Penn State is a strong team with
a couple of exceptional players, in-
cluding Jen Stewart, their center
midfielder," Michigan coach Patti
Smith said. "They also are a team
with a lot of speed."
Despite Penn State's high na-
tional ranking, Michigan hopes to
take advantage of playing on its
home turf.
"I think that we have a definite
advantage by playing the game at
home," Smith said. "It helps to play
the game at (Oosterbaan Field
House) where we know the field."
The Wolverines will look to uti-
lize an aggressive offensive style to
get off a lot of shots early against

Penn State.
"They have a freshman goali(
who's good, but beatable," Smith
said. "We hope to be aggressive with
our attack. Our intensity and execu-
tion are important."
Aggressive play should be easy
for the Wolverines, who do not rely
solely on one star offensive player.
"Our scoring is spread out,"
Smith said. "Three to five (different)
players can score on any given
night."
Michigan should also maintain its
strong defense this weekend. The
solid play of senior Mary Beth Bird
and junior Lelli Hose continues to
anchor the Michigan defense. Add to
that the luxury of starting one of two
solid goalies for any game and the
Wolverines defense has the ability to
frustrate opponents.

A plethora of runners shall head
to the hills of Shepherd, Michigan
for the Michigan Intercollegiate
Championships tomorrow. While the
men's cross country squad will be
looking to improve upon their per-
formance last week, the women's
team hope to maintain the level of
racing they have experienced thus
far into the season.
This year's meet has been ex-
panded from all the Division I
schools in the state to include several
smaller schools as well. The
Wolverines hope to avenge last
week's loss to Eastern Michigan.
No. 1 men's runner, Matt Smith,
will miss tomorrow's contest in or-
der to take the GRE for admittance
into graduate school. Jason Colvin
will also be out of the line-up in or-
der to rest some nagging injuries.
These two open spots will be filled
by red-shirt freshman Carlos Par-

dello and junior Shawn Mackay.
Mackay, who was the Big Ten
Rookie-of-the-Year and the Central
Collegiate's Individual Champion
last year, will be racing for the first
time this season.
To date, health problems have
not played a factor in the women's
camp. Only minor colds have hin-
dered the Wolverines, although race
results haven't indicated it.
The women, who turned in supe-
rior performances last weekend in
South Bend, Ind., look for similar
success in Shepherd. Michigan
runners captured the top four places
at the Notre Dame Invitational, a
meet which featured top regional
contenders. Michigan State should
provide the Wolverines with their
toughest competition. Yet having
already crushed Michigan State in a
dual meet, Michigan's women
should dominate the field this week,
led by standouts sophomore Karen
Harvey and senior all-American
Amy Buchholz.

Led by senior co-captain Tar-
nisha Thompson, recently named
conference player-of-the-week after
breaking Michigan's all-time indi-
vidual assist record, the Wolverines
charge into Columbus to duel with
last season's conference champion.
Thompson now has 2,176 assists, 37
ahead of the previous record.
Thompson is the first Wolverine to
receive this award since 1987.
Ohio State completed its 1991
Big Ten campaign with an unblem-
ished record of 20-0. After their im-
pressive conference finish, the Buck-
eyes forged ahead to a berth in the
national semifinals, where they lost
to eventual champion UCLA.
Led by last season's Rookie-of-
the-Year Laura Davis, Ohio State
also complements last season's ex-
cellent performers with a top notch
recruiting class, featuring five mem-
bers of Volleyball Monthly's "Fab
50" players. The Buckeyes won both
meetings with Michigan last year in
convincing fashion, each in three
games.
Penn State also ripped the Wol-
verines in a pair of three-game
matches, en route to completing the
conference schedule at 15-5 - good
enough for runner up honors to the
Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions also
advanced to the NCAA Tournament,
only to lose in the second-round to
Ohio State.

Ten's first team since Penn State's
initiation into the conference.
