They all have had the pleasure of seeing the Michigan field hockey team in action. Tonight at 7 p.m. in Oosterbaan Field House, the city of Ann Arbor will finally get its first look at the Wolverines as they play Miami of Ohio. The team has bolted out to a 5-1 start and a 2-0 record in the Big Ten. Michigan will be looking for its fifth consecutive victory in this evening's contest, after coming off a big week- end series in Columbus, where they swept arch-rivals Michigan State and Ohio State. "We played well this weekend," Michigan coach Patti Smith said. "I was real happy with the MSU game. We got a lot of shots against a Big Ten team, which is a good boost for us." Michigan won the opening game Saturday against the Spartans, 4-0. Sunday, the Wolverines pulled out a close match over Ohio State, 2-1. Senior defender Mary Beth Bird and junior forward Kalli Hose were pleased with the effort this weekend, especially against the Buckeyes. "We played together well," Bird said. "There was a little pressure (against Ohio State), but we re- sponded and played well." "We're improving each game," Hose said. "We haven't peaked yet, which is good because we don't want to peak early. I'm glad we were successful and that we still can im- prove." In Miami, the Wolverines will face a team with a losing record, but one that has played some tough competition. All four of the Redskins' losses have been to top-20 teams, and three of those have been by two goals or less. This past week- end, Miami lost 2-1 to sixth-ranked Ball State and, 2-1, in overtime, to 18th-ranked Syracuse. Its only lop- sided loss came to No. 1 ranked Old Dominion, 7-0. The Wolverines will approach this game just as they have done thus far; they are looking for lots of shots and good aggressive defense. "We need to continue doing ev- erything we have been doing," Smith said. "Our vision can be better, and our defense can be better. We won't be satisfied unless we play the best we can." Hose Hose commented that the non- conference game will allow the team to work on specifics and practice the things it needs to do to win in the Big Ten. "We need to continue to work the ball to the right side (on offense) and to force their attack to our strong side on defense," Hose said. If you choose the most games correctly you can eat, eat, eat your way to a D'Antonio, who has a 2.1 goals against average. She has made 77 saves on 93 shots this year. The of- fense is keyed by midfielder Patty Gerah, who is tied for team lead in goals and leads the team in assists. Michigan will look towards Katie Thomas and Hose to lead its offense. Thomas is the team's leading scorer with seven goals, and Hose is second with four. She also leads the team with four assists. Defensively, both Michigan goalies are having productive sea- sons. Nicole Hoover and Rachael Geisthardt have only allowed six goals in six games and have pitched three shutouts. After such a big weekend, there may be a chance for a letdown, but Bird doesn't think this will happen. "I think the opposite will hap- pen," Bird says. "We've been on the road for the whole season. I heard there is supposed to be a good crowd, so it will be nice to play at home." Hose thinks the team learned a valuable lesson when it lost to William and Mary and believes the Wolverines are ready for Miami. Barry speaks on Lions '0' DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes is planning to change the balance between his two new offensive systems. But Barry Sanders thinks that might not be go- ing far enough. Sanders, whose 70- yard average this season is 24 under his career mark, thinks the Lions might be trying to do too many dif- ferent things. "We might end up as ... how do they say it? A jack of all trades and a master of none," Sanders said. "I think there are some players who would like to know which way we will be going." The conflict is between the old run-and-shoot system, and the new tight-end offense. Although all of Detroit's long touchdowns have come with two tight ends in the game, they have moved the ball con- sistently with four wide receivers. "When we've played four wide- outs, we've had more success mov- ing the ball," Fontes said.
