The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 25, 1992- Page 13 NETTERS Continued from page 11 plenty of punch. The two have com- bined for over 200 kills this year, *and both are hitting above .200. Tomorrow, the Wolverines face a more formidable foe in Purdue, and the match should be a better barome- ter of how good they are. A much improved team from last year's squad that went 13-16, coach Carol Dewey's Boilermakers come in with a 7-3 record - two of the losses against top-25 teams. Expect the match to be an offen- sive shoot-out. It pits the No. 1- (Michigan) and No. 3-ranked teams in the Big Ten in kills. Purdue's po- tent lineup returns five starters from last year's squad, and it matches up well against Michigan's big guns of Michelle Horrigan, Aimee Smith and Joanna Collias. The leading returnee for the Boilermakers is senior middle blocker Darcy Jones. She was sec- ond on last year's team in kills, hit- ting percentage and total block aver- age, and this year she is doing more of the same. Jones leads the team with 179 kills and a .350 hitting per- centage (tops in the Big Ten) and her 105 blocks is third on the team. Two other players on Purdue are also in triple-figures in kills - se- nior middle blocker Donna Gill and junior outside hitter Carcy Burvis. Gill, a former member of the Purdue women's basketball team, is also first on the team in blocks and sec- ond in hitting percentage. The Boilermakers also feature an accom- plished setter in senior Paula Harmon, who has 410 assists. Stickers take on Big Ten rivals by Brett Johnson Coming off two consecutive shutouts, the Michigan field hockey team gets its first taste of Big Ten competition this weekend. The Wolverines will travel to Columbus to face two teams heading in com- pletely opposite directions - Michigan State and Ohio State. Tomorrow, the team faces off against the 1-5 Spartans. Michigan State is trying to rebound from its fourth straight losing season. With the loss of five starters from last year's squad, the Spartans are still looking for the right team chemistry. "They are a scrappy team, and S this is a big rivalry. But some of the games have been closer than they need to be," Michigan coach Patti Smith said. "We need to play our game and do what we do well. We also need to mentally think about shooting a lot." Last weekend at Central Michigan, the Wolverines fired away and were rewarded with a 5-0 I win. Michigan will be looking for similar play from Katie Thomas and the rest of the offense this weekend. Sunday morning, Michigan will face Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 3-1 (1-0 Big Ten) this season and are ranked 15th in the NCAA field hockey poll. "Ohio State has great penalty corners, and we need to keep them out of the attacking zone," Smith said. "They are a good passing team. Whoever is anticipating and focus- ing more will win." Ohio State is led by all-confer- ence goalie Sue Wilson. Wilson has conceded only three goals in four games this season and has impressed Smith with her pad work.. * COPIES 4 REG.
