Page 12,-The Michigan Daily- Friday, September 25, 1992 Women harriers continue upward trend by Rich Mitvalsky Daily Sports Writer Following a successful perfor- mance last weekend in Bloomington, the Michigan women's cross country team heads to East Lansing this weekend hoping for similar success against Michigan State. The Wolverines finished runner- up a week ago behind three-time de-. fending national champion Villanova at the Indiana Cross Country Invitational. Top performers from last week include sophomore Karen Harvey, who led all Michigan runners with a seventh-place finish, and senior all-American Amy Buchholz, who came in eighth. Junior Chris Szabo and frosh Courtney Babcock also finished in the top 12. "I think everyone was very happy with the way they ran last weekend," senior Kristine Westerby said. This year's young squad is com- prised of nine rookies and four sophomores, with four juniors and two seniors rounding out the lineup. "I think the younger runners who came in here are running extremely well and have been kind of a surprise for the team," Westerby said. "This program is so solid, but some of the freshmen have come in here and run really well and made all of the practices." Rookie runners Katy IHollbacher, Molly Lori and Amy Parker were noted for their exceptional perfor- mances. The threesome finished in 22nd, 27th and 28th places, respec- tively, in Bloomington. "Many of the freshmen are ahead of some of our times from last year, and we were sophomores," Szabo said. Last season, the Wolverines de- feated the Spartans in a home meet, en route to a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a 14th place finish at nationals. In addition, the Spartans competed in a make- shift intersquad dual with Michigan earlier this season, a contest which the Wolverines dominated. While Michigan expects the Spartans' first-line runners to com- pete, some top Wolverine runners will forego participation in East Lansing in order to focus specifically on more significant competition later in the season. Many Wolverines ran over 60 miles during the week, aiming for the Big Ten Champion- ships in Champaign in late October. "The course we will be running at the Big Tens in Illinois will be fiat and fast, which is different from our course," Szabo said. "Michigan State's course is also flat and fast, so this will be a different style of run- ning for us this weekend, and it will prepare us for Big Tens."
