Page 2- The Michigan Daily - Weekend etc. - September 24, 1992 Hawk's a yuppie haven If you watch"thirtysomething" re- runs and long to be in on the action, prance on over to the new Red Hawk Bar and Grill. Better yet, slap on some "Dockers" and drive there (in your Jeep/MG/high performance Bavarian Motor Wunder). To those who don't own "Dockers," stay at home and open a fresh bag of Doritos. The food and service at the Red Hawk don't gag,but the campy-yuppie atmosphere can suffocate the faint-hearted. Red Hawk's overenthusiastic menu describes abevy ofdishes aimed at pseudo-epicures. Sandwiches con- sistof "bountiful portions of the finest ingredients we could find ... with a handful of fries & that optional slaw." $.59/.79/.99 menu gourmands will balk at the "roasted tomato-chipotle Tir Y v t Noqw ekr salsa" (chipotle?!!). Similarly, if a 40-ouncer of "the beast" is your idea of good drink, the prices and descrip- tions of over 50 differentkinds of beer will send you grumbling back to Blue Front. Luckily, a menu is in the front window - next time you're on State St. skim it for a good laugh. Even if designer pizzas and house- cured gravlax (?) are your cup of tea, it's best to order with care. Esoteric combinations of ingredients make the Red Hawk's fare full of nasty sur- prises. Most of the ordinary items, like the cheddar cheese soup or barbe- cued ribs, are good, but idiosyncratic entrees, like the Beijing duck quesadillas, are peculiar at best. At worst, they'll make you reach for the four kinds of mustard or two kinds of catsup (not ketchup) on the table. The patrons of the Red Hawk are evenly divided between bar- and grill- goers. The restaurant is long and nar- row with a large bar occupying one side of the room. Consequently, din- ers have to put up with a lot of noise See FOOD, Page 7 6'Sa Wotk 0 0 0 O 0 G TPIN a a _ p a ©C r/ ' v ^ iGAsP/ MMCW f OQ O QiV TON ! t S rap1 ---- d cirI I- OA _' ~ . , , ,.,,,_ _...-.. .r , I *~,a at y ..- :.: e :;.: , : ::: :::: . a ry 1u . .
