This weekend's competition in the Conference Challenge in Lexington, Ky., will provide an excellent chance for the team to fulfill such preseason expectations. Competing with Michigan this weekend in the Conference Chal- lenge will be Kentucky, Maryland and Miami (Ohio). The Wolverines feature a new coach, former U.S. National Team assistant coach Greg Giovanazzi. He hopes to continue to point the Wolverines in the upward direction that former coach and current asso- ciate athletic director Peggy Bradley-Doppes had them headed. Giovanazzi brings plenty of ex- perience to the coaching position. In addition to his duties for the U.S. National Team, he has been assistant coach for the men's and women's' volleyball teams at UCLA from 1981-1990, as well as the Hawaii men's volleyball team in 1980. He was also a head coach for the San Jose Golddiggers Women's Profes- sional Volleyball team in 1989. Besides his previous coaching duties, Giovanazzi has also had play- ing experience. He competed for UCLA from 1976-1978 and played professionally in 1979 for a team in Rome in the Italian League. The Wolverines have risen their level of play steadily from the team of two years ago that went 6-25 and * ""CRAND" RE 0SERVICE " SPEAKER REPAIRS AND COMPONENTS " PI4ONO SERVICE AND NEEDLES, CARTRIDGES H I Fl STUDIO USED DEPT. So far, under Giovanazzi, they have stormed through their competition this year, chalking up six wins in eight games. Anchoring this year's team is outside hitter Michelle Horrigan. An all-Big Ten second team selection as a sophomore last year, she is second in the nation this year in kills-per- game. Junior JoAnna Collias, a de- fensive specialist who is second in the Big Ten in digs, is another stand- out at the outside hitter position. In addition to Horrigan and Collias, seniors Hayley Lorenzen and Chris White provide Michigan with strong outside hitting. Senior setter Tarnisha Thompson, third in, the Big Ten in hitting efficiency, and sophomore middle blocker Aimee Smith are several others of the many noteworthy players on the team. by Brett Johnson The Michigan field hockey team will take its 2-1 record to Mt. Pleasant Sunday for a match with Central Michigan. Fresh from a 2-0 win at Rutgers Monday, the team is primed for its first game in the Midwest. "We want to push our speed and endurance against Central and con- centrate on ourselves," Michigan coach Patti Smith said. "We need to think about what we are doing and what our roles are. We did a good job of that at Rutgers." The Chippewas have started the season 0-2, but Smith thinks this week's game will be a good contest. Last year, the Wolverines blanked CMU, 1-0, in Ann Arbor. "They are always a tough game," Smith said. "Anytime a MAC (Mid American Conference) school takes on a Big Ten school they get up for it. We have had a lot of tough games against them." Smith indicated that the keys to winning will be maintaining aggres- sive play on both ends of the field. "Offensively, we need to take lots of shots and attack the ball. We need to create as many scoring op- portunities as possible," Smith said.
