Cowboys no match for Blue i
by John Niyo
Daily Football Writer
QUARTERBACKS:ThiS suddenly has
become a sore spot for Michigan. With
Elvis Grbac sidelined with a severely
sprained ankle, Todd Collins will get
the starting nodand his first real chance
to shine.
Junior college transfer Andy
Loveland beat out fellow JC transfer
Derek Chapman for the Oklahoma
State starting job, but only completed
8 of 16 attempts for 110 yards and one
touchdown in its Sept. 5th 35-10
thrashing of Indiana State.
Advantage: EVEN
RUNNING BACK~S: Gone are the days
of Thurman Thomas and Barry S and-
ers. The Cowboys are not running
roughshod over opposing defenses in
the post-probation era, evidenced by
last year's team statistics (113.2 ypg,
2.9 per carry, 3 TDs).
But sophomore Rafael Denson
brings hope to fans in Stillwater with
his 4.3 speed - speed he showcased
vs. Indiana State, running for110 yards
and two TDs on 19 carries.
Michigan will likely rely on a two-
back rotation this weekend, with
Tyrone Wheatley out with a groin
injury. Ricky Powers will be out to
reestablish his status as the team's
No. 1 option. Jesse Johnson was
impressive against Notre Dame.
run-blocking from his offensive line,
but was very pleased with the pass
protection against Notre Dame.
Oklahoma State returns a veteran
line, but that doesn't say much con-
sidering last year's 9.6 points per game
average.
Advantage: Michigan
against Indiana State. %
Advantage: Michigan
SECONDARY: Corwin Brown and
Coleman Wallace led the Wolver-,{
ines with 11Itackles apiece against the
Irish as the secondary played a key .
role in Notre Dame's inability tobreak
the big play.
Senior free safety Scott Harmon'"
returns as a junior to anchor the Cow
boys' secondary.

Michigan tailback Jesse Johnson and the rest of the Wolverines take on
Oklahoma State Saturday.
RECEIVERS: Michigan receivers
found the openings in the Notre Dame
defense last weekend, showcasing an
efficient passing attack.
Derrick Alexander snuffed any
apprehension regarding his injured
knee, with six catches for 92 yards
and one TD. Walter Smith showed
his toughness with several receptions
in traffic, and tight end Tony McGee
had a big day, equalling his career
total with four catches.
Oklahoma State's two starting
wideouts are not giants. Bert Milli-
ner is 5-foot-6, 150 pounds. Mark
Cheatwood is 5-9, 175.
Advantage: Michigan
OFFENSIVE LINE: Michigan coach
Gary Moeller hopes to see improved
Advantage: Michigan
DEFENSIVE LINE: Michigan un-
veiled its new-look defensive scheme
and saw considerable success in the
second half against Notre Dame, put-
ting pressure on Rick Mirer.
Defensive end Jason Gilden leads
the Cowboys'rush, recording 16 sacks
last season.
Advantage: Michigan
LINEBACKERS: Michigan's
linebacking corps had trouble stop-
ping the run, but didn't allow many
big gains.
Oklahoma State's trio is led by
Chaucer Funchess, but coach Pat
Jones was dissatisfied with their play
Advantage: Michigan
KICKERS: Pete Elezovic has the"
starting kicking job for now, and made,
his only attempt last weekend:-
Michigan's punters still platoon.
Oklahoma State's punter is Scott
Tyner, a juco all-American last sea;,
son. Placekicker Ricky Myers never
booted one over than 40 yards last~
year.
