76-GUIDE - a U-M telephone
counseling line - has been forced to
cut its hours due to financial difficul-
ties, counselors said.
The hotline is a service provided
by U-M to assist students with
problems ranging from relationships
to classes to thoughts of suicide.
"We're not just a crisis hotline ...
we deal with anything," said Todd
Sevig, a senior counselor and the
coordinating director of the phone
line.
Like many U-M departments, 76-
GUIDE will receive funding cuts
this year.
"It's unclear what impact there
will be," Sevig said.
The budget cut has forced the or-
ganization to conduct a self-study to
determine where it can save money
"We made a reduction in hours
funding
based on this analysis," Sevig said.
This year, 76-GUIDE is operat-
ing from 7 p.m.-8 a.m., seven days a
week. This represents a cutback
from the previous schedule of 5
p.m.-9 a.m. through the week and
24-hour service on the weekends.
"Service to students won't be
compromised," Sevig added.
However, students have other
counseling options if they cannot
reach 76-GUIDE or feel they need
any sort of assistance.
For emergencies, the U-M
Hospital's Psychiatric Emergency
Service offers counseling service 24
hours a day.
"Name it and we're there," said
Charles Kieffer, executive director
of S.O.S. and a U-M graduate.
"We've maintained our commit-
ment to 24-hour availability (despite
budget constraints)," Kieffer said.
