Page 2-The Michigan Daily -Weekend etc. - September 17, 1992 A hip addition to State St. A slew of new restaurants and bars infested Ann Arbor over the summer. Cafes which hawk all sorts of coffees, espressos, and cappuccinos are the most virulent of the newcomers and seem to lurk around every corner. The most conspicuous of these neo-bohe- mian places is Amer's Mediterranean Deli located across from Michigan Book and Supply. This gigantic cafe/deli is the sec- ond Amer's (the first being at 611 Church St.) and is also the larger of the two. Amer's is easily one of the hippest places to eat on State St. Its successful debut owes much to the fact that in addition to offering coffee, it also has sandwiches, Mid-Eastern foods, baked goods, and Haagen Dazs ice cream. Simply serving any one of rraf7rL-t°a7 NaW ,Q the aforementioned specialties quali- fies as trendy: having all of them, well, that's the grooviest idea this side of condom stores. Most people will go to Amer's for some variety of coffee, which is virtu- ally indistinguishable from the stuff offered at the dozen or so other cafes on the block. Whatever your poison - mocha, latte, espresso, skin-free extra crispy - they have it, and the prices are good at $1.00 to $2.00 a cup depending on style and size. The sandwiches at Amer's are New York style: huge, heavy, and served in little plastic baskets. Most even have authentic-sounding East Coast names like the Brooklyn Reuben, the New York Club, and the 2nd Street. Almost all are palatable and competi- tively priced at $5.29. They'll even customize sandwiches upon request. The salads, quiches, and lasagnas are best eaten during the lunch and early afternoon hours. Later, they start to get a little too crusty and/or soggy depending on what you want. Fur- See FooD, Page 5 6M 70o .
