Women's Soccer Football vs. Oklahoma State nMichiganSaturday, 12:35 p.m. (ESPN) tc ellFie lMichigan Stadium MitcellRiel The Michigan Daily Wednesday, September 16, 1992 Page S I Women kickers hope to halt losing ways Collins could get OSU starting nod by Mike Hill Daily Sports Writer After a record setting season last, year, it's difficult for the women's club soccer team to swallow the less than 'spectacular start to its new campaign. The Wolverines (2-4-3), who won 28 games a year ago, have al- ready dropped as many games as they did all last season. The loss of starters Lori Green, Heather Marshall, Leslie Martin, and Maureen Scullen to graduation seems to have dampened the Mich- igan attack more than was expected. "It's really been a different story so far from last year," sophomore Kim Chenet said. "We lost those four starters, but we also had our toughest games at the beginning of our schedule. We just need to get used to playing with each other a lit- tle better and we'll be okay." After knocking off Purdue 2-0 last weekend, the Wolverines hope to build on their one game winning streak today at 5 p.m. when they face Eastern Michigan's club team at Mitchell Field. The Eagles are an unfamiliar foe since their program is relatively new. "We really don't know what to expect from them," captain Shannon Loper said. "But we did beat them pretty easily indoors last winter. But playing on turf is obviously a lot different than playing outside." Head coach Peter Manning, who took over last season during the win- ter term, is in his first full season at the helm for the Wolverines after two seasons as an assistant. Manning faces the difficult task of living up to last year's success. "He's really good because he knows how all of us play," Loper said. "It's much easier to work with him because he knows our styles, strengths and weaknesses." Michigan features senior Crissy Rice in goal and leading scorer Lisa Ashton, Alycha Stewart and Loper at the forward spots. The Wolverines hope to get the offense in gear after relatively low scoring affairs in their opening games. "We need to be more aggressive on the offensive end," Loper said. "But I think that will come with ex- perience. But, we do need to learn how to play together better. We're not allowed to lose anymore." by Jeni Durst Daily Football Writer Todd Collins may be a very happy, if not very nervous, man this Saturday. Michigan's backup quar- terback could participate in his very first collegiate start when the Wolverines face Oklahoma State. Regular starting quarterback Elvis Grbac sprained his left ankle in last weekend's game against Notre Dame and is, at this point, extremely questionable for this Saturday's matchup. "I don't like to play guys who haven't practiced," Wolverine coach Gary Moeller said about Grbac. "I don't know if it's in his best interest, but it's no better off than (before) as far as looking at him as a possibility of playing. There's an outside chance, but it's not a strong one at this point." Collins, a redshirt sophomore, played in six out of the Wolverines' 12 games last year in relief of Grbac, including a five for five passing per- formance in his Michigan debut against Florida State. "I think Todd's been around here long enough that he should go in and play pretty decent because he knows our system," Moeller said. "It's not like starting with a freshman or a sophomore or anything. I feel confi- dent in what he might do and I think it's sometimes better that he knows the whole week in advance that he's probably going to be the player, so he can get ready for it rather than being thrown into the fray of the thing. I got some confidence in him." Collins, at 6 feet 5, 240 pounds, gives up some height and experience compared to Grbac (6-6, 231), but their similar styles should allow Collins to fit into Michigan's stfan dard play formations. "The thing Elvis could have given us is just the number of games (he) has in experience," Moeller added. "But (Collins) will be a very similar type quarterback." iI (5; dkfs)I DEPARTMENT OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS Student ice hockey tickets on sale today The Michigan Athletic Depart- chase season tickets for fellow ment has announced that orders for classmates by providing additional 1992-93 student season hockey tick- valid student identification cards and ets will be accepted today from 8 completed applications.
