Running backs Dennis Washington and Tyrone Wheatley and quarter- back Elvis Grbac all suffered signif- icant injuries. Many other players had minor injuries, but will not miss any time. Washington's injury was the most severe of the three. The senior fullback dislocated his knee in the third quarter Saturday and will miss the entire season. Washington stayed in South Bend, Ind., after the game before flying back to Ann Arbor Sunday. "It's more of a loss than you think," Michigan coach Gary Moeller said. "He's a neat player. He's a real gutsy guy." Redshirt frosh Ch6 Foster will replace Washington as the backup to Burnie Legette at fullback. Grbac and Wheatley are both listed day-to-day and are question- able for this weekend's game with Oklahoma State. Grbac sprained his left ankle in two places in the fourth quarter, when he was sacked by Irish defensive end Devon McDonald. Grbac finished the game despite the injury. The coaching staff was not aware of the severity of the in- jury until the team returned to Ann Arbor where Grbac had a noticeable limp. The training staff has put Grbac on crutches to immobilize the ankle. "It's not just a slight sprain, it's more of a significant sprain," Moeller said. "He kept playing and seemed to do fine. He probably played in a lot more pain than we knew. But I'm not making excuses # K.I-SOFFE-ILL1ETTE/Iaily Sophomore tailback Tyrone Wheatley had his legs split apart like a wishbone in Saturday's game at Notre Dame. Wheatley suffered muscle pulls up one leg and halfway down the other and is listed as day-to-day. The CDs Listed Surrounding This Ad Are Just $9.99 Eachl!! for him. He wouldn't want me to. He wanted to play because that's the kind of player he is." If Grbac cannot practice this week but is healthy by Saturday, Moeller will have a difficult decision to make between starting Grbac and redshirt sophomore Todd Collins. "I don't like playing a guy who missed all of practice at any posi- tion," Moeller said. "But you have to gauge every position differently. Every decision you make as coach has to be in the best interest of the team. We have the 'don't practice, don't play' rule to motivate guys to I U 1(5; do fow) DEPARTMENT OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS lA . r ,.- tt tom! ,s.. a INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM ICE HOCKEY--Fall Term Entries Taken: Tuesday 9/22 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. IMSB Main Office Play Begins: Sunday 9/27 For Additional Information Contact IMSB 763-3562 practice. Also, if you miss practice, you won't be in sync. The guy be- hind you will be in better position to play." If Grbac can not play, Moeller is confident in Collins' ability to fill in at quarterback. "Collins is very similar in a lot of respects to Elvis," Moeller said. "He's not as tall - he's about an inch smaller. They have a lot of the same personality. They're not clones or twins or anything, but it's not a drastic change. He's got a good re- lease. He can throw the ball. If he can't run the team now, I've got to kick him in the rear end." The one positive for the Wolverines is that Grbac's injury is to his left ankle instead of his right. A right-hander pushes off of his right foot to throw, and an injury to that ankle could keep Grbac out for an extra week. While Wheatley is also consid- ered questionable for Saturday, his injury is more serious. On the final drive of the game, Wheatley ran the ball 16 yards to set the Wolverines up at the Irish 30. Irish free safety Jeff Burrs dragged Wheatley down, and Wheatley's legs were pulled apart. Wheatley has a pull stretching from his left ankle to his right knee. "Wheatley is very doubtful at this point," Moeller said. "He got spread apart like a wishbone being broked. You don't know how anyone will feel, but Tyrone is more question- able than Elvis." Moeller held a brief scrimmage last night with most of his reserves. This scrimmage served two purposes - to give the younger players play- ing time and to find a third-string tailback for Saturday. "Everyone needs to play early in the year," Moeller said. "You can't have a guy have his first game in two or three weeks. They need to get playing time now." Remy Hamilton and- Pat Maloney, who both missed the Notre Dame game, may be back for this weekend. Hamilton, a freshman kicker, pulled a muscle in fall prac- tice and might be able to kick field goals and extra points this weekend, but will not kick off for a few more weeks. However, Moeller was happy with Peter Elezovic's placement kicking in the opener. "Elezovic did a good job," Moeller said. "He knocked that field goal right down the center. The only thing off a little was the second extra point. The biggest problem came on kickoffs. We gave up too much field position. We've got to work on * - . 4..~. 4 w.; .
