The Michigan Daily- Tuesday, September 15,1992-Page 9 Sonic Youth Dirty DGC Don't call it a comeback. More noise than a dozen Sub Pop singles, Sonic Youth's latest gift, "Dirty," quite defiantly reclaims their crown as the only true kings (and queen) of all that is glorious grunge. Kicking off with some blues with a real gun, the grinding "100%," this LP doesn't let up until the cold, bitter end. Lurching, drunken rhy- thms collide with hellbent kamikaze guitars to create the heavenly caco- phony so many have tried to emu- late, but only Sonic Youth have tnailed. Kim Gordon's gut-wrenching howls pierce the heart of noiseworks like the anti-sexist "Swimsuit Issue," and whispers mournfully on the lament for a dead friend, "JC." From the lofty, orchestral bliss of "Sugarkane," to the Jesse Helms-in- a-slampit fantasy of "Chapel Hill," "Dirty" has the earmarking of 1992's platter of the year. Eschewing any of the pop styling that crept out on the stunning "Goo," Sonic Youth has still got a fuzzbox, and use it to shove down your throat. - Scott Sterling Cud Asquanus A&M Praise: Cud sounds like the Talking Heads with slightly more pop-rocking melodies, but the band strains hard to be charming. Truth: The band claims to "Thrill Me" ("Easy Better"). Yeah, right. - Annette Petruso Kitchens of Distinction * The Death of Cool A&M Kitchens of Distinction are Echo and the Bunnymen etc. overcooked to mediocrity. "The Death of Cool" didn't have a chance. - Annette Petruso Suicidal Tendencies The Art Of Rebellion *Epic Like a thinking man's Motorhead with jazzy Rush chord changes (or maybe Rollins with more of a sense of humor), the latest crunchfest from Southern Cal's thrash-metal masters headbangs with a brain. Showing off some serious chops, Suicidal Tendencies display outra- geously mature musicianship with- out sounding pretentious. They suc- cessfully pull off delicate guitar breaks ("Nobody Hears") and acoustically-powered ballads ( "I'll Hate You Better") without blinking an eyelash. Of course, "The Art Of Rebel- lion" is hardly short on mosh-pit rave-ups, with songs like "Gotta Kill Captain Stupid" and "Where's The Truth?" kicking the sledge-o-meter well into the red. Big, smart, and loud. - Scott Sterling AUSTRALIA Continued from page 5 Sydney bands, including The Strange, who placed fourth nation- ally last year, have made it to the Nationals. Johnstone says other individuals have used the Comp as a "stepping stone" to other things. For instance, members of the local Bug House and Penguins On Safari were recruited as a result of the Band Comp. Club Hoy, a group currently making a name for itself on the Australian rock scene, began three years ago at the University of Sydney Union Band Competition. Johnstone ex- plains, "The whole idea of the Band Comp is an encouragement process." All of that's good and fine, but I'm holding out to see the Australian '70s era Elvis look-alike do his Johnny Cash impersonation. With a delightful name like Cud, these cuties must be good. hme Fffka oA plIM r &y AffiAir is now accepting applications for We are seeking highly motivated college students to work with high school students in the Martin Luther King, Jr./Cesar Chavez/Rosa Parks College Club Program.
