Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 14, 1992 Ex-lax, prune juice and God save the beat by Greg Baise Anyone who isn't disappointed in the knowledge that the "RE/Search Industrial Culture Handbook" makes no reference to KMFDM will cer- tainly want to consider at least stumbling in the general direction of "The Tyranny of the Beat" sampler. This CD loosely encapsulates a time when the beat had little to do with beats-per-minute. The beat was something felt - like the throbbings of the Quartet Gristle or the mono- lithic, smashing, auditory torture chambers of Non. These musicians were survivalists ready to obliterate any squares that might want to par- take of their well-stocked under- ground. If you're lucky you'll find the limited edition accompanying video, which has clips from the likes of Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Various Artists The Tyranny of the Beat and Paroxysm, Vol. 1 Mute Voltaire, Non and Frank Tovey. The CD/video combo will work more wonders on your "system" than in- gesting a case of Ex-Lax with some prune juice chasers. Besides the stuff of the true in- dustrial heyday, "Tyranny" includes documents of other bands with like- minded integrity - bands like Can, Swell Maps, and the band that threw a hell of a Birthday Party, the Boys Next Door. Euroschlock sneaks in, too: Die Krupps and Loop come to mind. Still, it's nice to see a Time Warner Company keep goodies like Monte Cazazza's "Candy Man" (as in "Children shouldn't accept candy from the...") and Wire (at the end of their relevance) available to a gen- eration that could use some Non to clean out its passages. Akin to modern-day Enigma rip- offs like Wir than to the relevant Wire, "Paroxysm, Vol. 1" showcases some current anonymous mutants spawned from secret Detroit techno studios. I'm sure there's somebody out there who can tell each of these artists apart, but it ain't me, Jack - I'm still learning. DJ Massive, the proto-phoneme Desiya, DCB-A, A.Z.T. - anyone who cares to work on untangling the mesmerizing beats, almost sub-sonic bass, and sub-thinking lyrics (my fave: "Ah- ah-ah-ah-cid bitch!" ad infinitum) can go for it. As far as providing preludes to roaming the ecstatic urban meatmar- kets of the 808 State, either the "Tyranny" or the "Paroxysm" could suffice. Both fill in the cracks of a decaying industrial landscape with the sounds of the remnants of two different underground cultures. But as some wise jazz editor once said, "Choose your camp wisely ..."
