Annually, the Penn Relays are regarded as one of the premier track events in the country, as the top athletes from the eastern and south- tern regions of the nation compete. "Much attention will be focused one the results of this meet," Michigan assistant coach Mike McGuire said. "The ACC, SEC, and most of the good teams east of Texas will be well represented here." Many Wolverine distance runners will make the trip to Philadelphia to- day, to compete in the "distance marathon" held Thursday evening. Included in tomorrow's events are the 3000, 5000, and 10,000-meter runs, and the distance medley. "We are really looking forward to this meet as a team, because of the level of competition," senior Carrie Yates said. "Most ofstheathletes here are of national caliber, and for anyone who can't run at nationals, this is the chance to run with the best." :":..::micngan September - 12 at Notre Dame 19 vs. Oklahoma St. 26 vs. Houston October - 3 vs. Iowa 10 vs. Michigan St. 17 at Indiana 24 vs. Minnesota 31 at Purdue November - 7 at Northwestern 14 vs. Illinois 21 at Ohio State IVI rlU 1iUUly 1 l n IIIUIEL~L I 1l" I by Bruce Inosenclo Daily Sports Writer Philadelphia is the, destination for the men's track team this weekend, as the City of Brotherly Love hosts the Penn Relays. The meet will be held at Penn Thursday through Saturday. Riding a wave of momentum, the Wolverines are expecting strong performances in the field events once again. Frosh javelin thrower Stan Johanning won last week with a toss of 232-11 at the Purdue Relays. Johanning set the school record for the third straight week and now holds the Big Ten record as well. Other field event hopefuls for this weekend include Luke Gentles in the triple jump, Dan Reddan in the high jump, and Brad Darr in the pole vault. The track events are looking stronger as the season progresses, with the 4x100 relay team nearing the 42- second mark. Also in the shorter distances, Mike Eccleston will look for anfirst-place finish in the 100- meters for the second consecutive weekend. The distance squad also has confidence on its side, as Chris Childs won the 1500 and Tony Carna won the 5000 last weekend. Gradually, the times in the shorter distances are becoming lower. Michigan's times in the longer distances are becoming faster at the - pace Michigan needs to peak late in its season. The Penn Relays meet is traditionally very competi- tive, bringing in talent from across the country. Michigan will finally get a first-hand look at some of the competition they may face later this spring. i __________________________________________________________________ . _____________________________ $ INSTANT CASH REBATE! $ ACCEPTS DIPLOMAS FOR CREDIT 1) INSTANT CASH REBATES OF $150.00, $100.00 OR $30.00 2)RECEIVE A $50.00 GIFT CERTIFICATE TO ULRICH'S BOOKSTORE AND 3)WIN A CD PLAYER SIGN.YOUR LEASE NOW TO QUALIFY!
