Page 18-The Michigan Daily- Wednesday, April 22, 1992 Post-season continues for 'M' tumblers Men's five impressive at regionals; look for more of the same in Lincoln Wymer, Carfora finish fairy tale season on high note in St. Paul by Mike Hill Daily Sports Writer Though the Michigan men's gymnastics team failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships as a whole, it will not go unrepresented this weekend in Lincoln, Neb. Michigan coach Bob Darden caught a flight this morning with pupils Jorge Camacho, Brian Winkler, Jim Round, Mike Mott and Glenn Hill. All five qualified for "the big dance" at the NCAA East Regional two weeks ago in Iowa City. The most interesting event of the championships may be the floor ex- ercise, where a state of Michigan dual looms. Winkler is the nation's best on the floor, but was edged by Camacho at the Regionals. The two will battle with Michigan State's Paul Dackerman, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation. "It's going to be a tumbling dual on the floor," Darden said. "Any of the three could win it. Brian's been ranked number one for a long time, but as Jorge showed two weeks ago, anything can happen." Winkler will also compete on the still rings and the vault. The Wolverines boast two quali- fiers on the pommel horse. Hill, a perennial participant at the champi- onships, will join Mott, a first-year qualifier. Hill garnered his trip to Lincoln with a 5th place-9.65 show- ing at regionals, while Mott notched 12th place with a 9.55. "They both have excellent chances to do well," Darden said. "Their scores from the East Regional rank right up there with competitors from the West Region." by Andy Stabile Daily Sports Writer The never-ending season will come to a fairy tale finish for two Michigan gymnasts this weekend. Michigan frosh Beth Wymer and redshirt frosh Kelly Carfora both qualified for the 1992 NCAA National Championships Friday and Saturday in St. Paul, Minn. Representation of the Wolverines at the National Championships will Round closes out his career by competing in the prestigious all- around. The senior has also com- peted in the championships before, and has a chance to qualify for the finals in all of the events. "Everyone's chances are great," Darden said. "There's no reason that we can't have finalists in every event. But, as always, it's a good day-bad day scenario. They've been training hard and I really think they're going to fly." qualifier. She will compete with No. 1-seeded Utah during the rotations. Carfora was the 12th and final at- large qualifier and will rotate with Stanford. Ironically, the Cardinal qualified as the 12th and final team for the tournament, knocking the Wolverines from that spot. The two Wolverines become only the second and third Michigan gym- nasts to earn individual qualification to the National Championships. In 1988, Angela Williams competed at the meet and finished 18th in the all- around competition. E With one of the higher all-around composite scores in the country (39.0667), Wymer's qualification came as no surprise. However, it was not clear weather Carfora (38.1416) would qualify for the meet until well after the NCAA Central Regional Championships had completed two weeks ago in Missouri. Wolverine head coach Bev Fry was named 1992 Central Region Coach of the Year. Fry led Michigan (189.775) to a second-place finish behind Alabama (193.125) in the Central Regional Championships April 9. The Wolverines sent gym- nasts Wendy Wilkinson and Ali Winski to the meet with at-large bids last season, but did not qualify as a team. Michigan assistant coach Dave _ Kuzara shared Central Region Assistant Coach of the year honors with Alabama's Dave Patterson. MOP.LLYI .1 I VhNWEII Amy Malik and the rest of the Wolverines head to Evanston this weekend to take on Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. Women netters set 7 I sights on by Sharon Lundy Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's tennis team will attempt to secure a top- four conference ranking when it faces Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten tournament in Evanston this weekend. The Wol- verines and Wildcats are the fourth- and fifth-seeded teams in the tournament, respectively. Although Michigan lost to Northwestern, 5-4, in a match ear- lier this season, the seeding was not a surprise for several reasons. Michigan was awarded a win against No. 1 seed Indiana for the match during the season in which Carfora p U 4 WHAT'S HAPPENING CRECREATIONAL SPORTS Intramural Sports Program, SOFTBALL SAND VOLLEYBALL 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL Entries open: Wednesday, May 6,1992 Entries close: Wednesday, May 13, 1992 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. IMSB SUMMERTIME FUN!!! Northwestern has had some losses to schools that Michigan recorded victories against. The Wildcats lost matches against Iowa and Ohio State, two teams which the Wolverines defeated. "(Northwestern) has definitely been struggling recently," assistant coach Wendy Gilles said. Michigan played the North- western match at the beginning of the season without Kalei Beamon, who will be in the Wolverine lineup this weekend. "I think we have a very good chance of defeating them," co-cap- tain Freddy Adam said. " Khlei was out, and it was our firstTBig Ten match of the season when we played (Northwestern) earlier." "We're seeded above them, but in our minds we're still the under- .dog," Gilles said. LEARN BARTENDING 40 Hours- Weekends Low tuiton/Job placement 557-7757 Professional Bartenders School IS BACK!
