The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, April 22,1992 - Page 17 Men's tennis awaits rematch with OSU by Adam Miller Daily Sports Writer Let's say that the Big Ten men's tennis championships in Madison are tomorrow. Now, they're not, but if you insist on looking down the road to their actual date of May 1-3, things are going to get confusing, so just say they're tomorrow. In that case, everything is crystal clear. The fifth-seeded Michigan men's tennis team (6-4 Big Ten, 6- 13 overall) would face fourth-seeded Ohio State (6-3, 12-9) in the first round. But the tournament isn't tomor- row, and here's where it gets confus- ing. While Michigan has finished its season, Ohio State hasn't. The Buckeyes wrap up their campaign with a home match against Penn State, but not until April 25. Which means Big Ten pairings aren't officially released until this weekend. Which means it's time to specu- late. Which can be confusing. But maybe not that confusing. Either Ohio State will be four and Michigan five, or vice versa, and the number four and five seeds play each other. The point is essentially moot. Want to get confused again? The members of Michigan's team now seem to be taking the Buckeyes lightly, and are speaking of the sec- ond-round match, against likely first-seed Minnesota (8-0, 16-4 with two matches remaining), which will receive a first-round bye. The confidence is probably based on Michigan's improved team health. Last time Michigan and Ohio State met, the Wolverines were, in Michigan coach Brian Eisner's words, "devastated" by injuries. No. 1 David Kass, who recovered to complete his senior season 9-0 in the Big Ten, pledges this time will be different. "We're excited to play them," he said. "They beat us when we were without a lot of guys. Now, obvi- ously, we're healthy and we're going to win the singles. I'm confident we're not going to have any trouble with Ohio State." Minnesota is the last Big Ten op- ponent to have beaten Michigan prior to its three-match conference winning streak. The No. 17 Golden Gophers trounced the Wolverines in the final match before Brakus' and London's returned, 6-1. Only Kass' 6-1, 6-3 victory over Brian Uilhein avoiding the shutout. "To be honest," Kass said, "I think (Minnesota) is the only team in the Big Ten that can beat us when we're healthy. That's going to come down to a couple key matches, and whoever wins those is going to win the match." THE MICHIGAN DAILY 764-0552 1 , j r - THIS COULD BE THE SMARTEST MOVE OF YOUR COLLEGE CAREER.
