Page 12-The Michigan Daily- Tuesday, April 21, 1992 'M' baseball faces Eastern The Michigan baseball team faces Eastern Michigan University at 3 p.m. today at Fisher Stadium. The make- up game was originally rained out on March 31. The Wolverines (8-8 in the Big Ten, 18-21 overall) have lost four of their last five games and will look to the hot bats of Steve Buerkel and Scott Winterlee to help end the skid. Buerkel, a senior outfielder, leads Michigan in hit- ting with a .381 average. Buerkel has also been a me- nace on the base paths with 12 stolen bases in 18 at- tempts. Winterlee, a junior, upped his average to .346 by going 4-for-5 in Sunday's finale against Indiana. Rookie Ron Hollis, last season's Mr. Baseball on the Michigan high school circuit, has been Michigan's best pitcher of late. With victories in his last three outings, Hollis sports a perfect 3-0 record on the season. Michigan has split its two previous contests against Eastern. Eastern took the opener in Ypsilanti by a 9-8 score, and the Wolverines took the second contest in Ann Arbor, 3-2. Looking ahead to the weekend, Michigan State rolls into Fisher Stadium for a double header Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spartans took two from Northwestern on Sunday. After facing the Spartans, the Wolverines will have exam-week off before hosting four games against Ohio State the ensuing weekend. -Andy Stabile Daily Baseball Writer Blue softball looks for county bragging rights by Shawn DuFresne Daily Sports Writer After a short relishing of its sweep over Indiana last weekend, the red-hot Michigan softball team (12-2 Big Ten, 26-16) will return to the friendly confines of Varsity Dia- mond and try to clip the wings of the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a doubleheader today. The contest is dubbed as the Washtenaw County NCAA Division I Softball Battle. "We're not going to change our game plan,"MMichigan sophomore shortstop Mary Campana said. "We're preparing for Eastern like (it was) any Big Ten team." Campana hit a game-winning RBI in one of Michigan's games this weekend. The Eagles (5-9 Mid-American Conference, 17-18) are coming off a third place finish in the Frost Cutlery Classic held in Chattanooga, Tenn. They captured the tournament last season, but this year sported a 5-2 record, losing to eventual champion Louisiana Tech, 4-1. The Wolverines boasted a 7-1 record last week to catapult to first place in the Big Ten. They will look for a strong performance by junior outfielder Patti Benedict, who cur- rently leads the Michigan attack with a .371 batting average, 46 hits - in- cluding nine doubles, four triples and one dinger - and 23 RBI. Junior catcher Karla Kunnen and Campana will also try to improve their respective .298 and .281 averages by contributing to the Michigan offense. Frosh pitcher Kelly Kovach, who was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week April 14, currently sports a 8-1 conference record (13-5 overall) with a 0.66 ERA (1.47), surrender- ing only five earned runs (24) in 53.1 innings (114.2). Junior pitcher Kelly Forbis, who recorded a victory last weekend over Indiana, is 6-4. overall with one save and a 1.85 ERA.
