Page 8- The Michigan Daily- Tuesday, April 21,1992 RECORDS Continued from page 5 form, of course. The "Divine Thing" traverses the same, tired territory as the Dragons' last album, Lovegod, whose only noteworthy cuts were a dance/guitar- pop cover of the Stones' "I'm Free," and their original, the title track, which sounds exactly like the cover. As the Stones used Black female backup singers to give a soul feel to their white-bread version of R & B, so the Soup Dragons use the diva on this 12" to give their sound a mod- ern, Marky Mark / C + C Music Factory feel. "Divine Thing" is a little better than most of the cuts on Lovegod, but rather boring. How many over- used dance sounds can the Soup Dragons put in three remixes? Too many to count. Even the B-side "Driving" does the same thing, but isn't really a remix and therefore less offensive. It's just a bad dance-rock track instead of three-plus minutes of technological-heavy noise. The "Revisited" mix has a line, "Your vanity will always be your greatest thing," which sums up this band's attitude toward itself. The Stones suck now, guys. Stop the worship and get a life. - Annette Petruso The Ramones Loco Live Sire Da brudders Ramone recently made SPIN magazine's list of the seven greatest bands of all time. Loco Live, recorded in Barcelona, Spain, proves why. With three chords and four syllables, the boys rip through 32 songs in less time than the drum solo from "In-A- Gadda-Da-Vida." The album plays like a Ramones medley, except the band only has one song, so all that differentiates, say, "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" from "Rock 'N' Roll High School" are Joey's cries of "ONETWOTHREEFOUR!" (or, for some variety once in awhile, "EINZEZWEIDREIFIRE!") Classics like "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "Pinhead" are mixed in with Lost Classics like "Wart Hog," "Cretin Hop" and "The KKK Took My Baby Away." Better than the new Spinal Tap. -Mark Binelli Poi Dog Pondering Volo Volo Columbia The quirky band's dilemma: Can a band still be considered original if it continues to play in the same vein for more than two albums? This is at the roots of the complaints about the latest They Might Be Giants disc, and it also broke up Camper Van Beethoven (thankfully). Will Poi Dog, too, fall victim to their own creativity? Volo Volo is not nearly as good as their last release, Wishing Like the Mountain and Thinking Like the Sea, but it shows that their style and general aura has not become tire- some. Their shtick, a combination of geeky college rock with worldbeat rhythms and exotic instruments, has made them one of America's most idiosyncratic bands. Just when you think they're up to the same old tricks, they can pull something out of left field and place a big smile on your face. This album succeeds because Poi Dog relies less on their quirkiness, and more on their musicianship. It's not that their previous releases don't feature much jamming, but rather that this record is not as goofy. True Dogheads will not be disappointed. Poi Dog Pondering play tonight at the Blind Pig. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 in advance. But how about pondering this one: just what the hell is Poi anyway? The Soup Dragons are so cute. But no matter how hard you try, you'll find it difficult to like their music and their new "Divine Thing" single.
