Iowa State (634) won the tour- nament and was followed by Wisconsin (639), Michigan State (643), Purdue (648) and the Wolverines (650). The tournament did not begin well for Michigan or the other 16 teams. The first four holes were played in a driving rain which even- tually forced play to be delayed when the greens became flooded. The Wolverines were not playing well at the delay, but came back strong to finish the day.at 323, good for a. fourth-place tie with Purdue. "I think the rain delay helped us all;" Zonder said. "We all relaxed coach Sue LeClair felt the Wol- verines had a good shot at winning the tournament at that point. However, Michigan's 327 was not enough as Iowa State, which was sixth after the first 18 holes, blis- tered the course with a 310 to take the crown. After playing well in the fall sea- son, back-to-back 14th place finishes welcomed Michigan to the spring season. While poor weather pre- vented the Wolverines from seeing the course as often as they would have liked early in the season, the last two weeks were much kinder. "They've been able to get out and play," LeClair said. "They are all hitting well. I knew it was there somewhere, it was just a matter of getting it going." Although the. Big Ten Cham- pionship are just two weeks away, the Wolverines were not concerned that the three other Big Ten teams in the Boilermaker Invite all out- distanced Michigan. "We're not phased by it," Zonder said. "We have beaten these teams before and we'll beat them at Big Tens. I think we'll peak at Big Tens."- ::. ;.K.s mite them whe: ies }"::n:":i: tota" t pu"::;:::.}::rse io:%:":" : }:":t:"uu anu ::?....me ra<":c : : "i,::
