Dancers take steps of their owns

English composition classes have final papers to
determine how well the student has mastered the craft
of writing. Other academic courses rely on final exams
and presentations. How does one measure mastery and
success in a course like Dance Composition? Here at
the University, students receive their final grades by
presenting their polished and finalized work in a pu-
blic composition showing.
The dance composition showings will feature the
Freshperson Touring Company, a group of first-year
dance majors who have recently toured their self-ge-
nerated show to area high schools. Through their ex-
plorations of some of the basic elements of choreo-
graphy - time, space, shape and motion - these 12
students will demonstrate how raw energy can be
harnessed into controlled and spirited movement.
Under the direction of associate dance professor
Jessica Fogel and music rrofessor Stephen Rush, the

sophomore Dance class has been discovering the ways
in which sound may be used, or discarded, in choreo-
graphy. Different works will be presented: in silence;
using self-accompaniment; exploring music visuali-
zation and aural backdrop; and demonstrating the pos-
sibilities of a connotative collage score.
The Dance Improvisation Group, after several re-
cent successful performances, will perform contact
improvisation, which incorporates the concepts of hu-
man interaction and immediate kinesthetic reaction.
Another course offered in the junior year is Dance
Video; these students will be showing a tape as their
culminating term project. Finally, Biza Sompa's Con-
golese class will close the afternoon's show with tra-
ditional movement and choreography.
THE DANCE COMPOSITION SHOWINGS will be
held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Studio A of the dance

fool. It's hard to believe that the dis-

successful with such a psychotic
personality. And it's even harder to
believe that Oscar-winning veteran
Duvall would accept such a pitiful
role.
