Page 22-The Michigan Daily--Weekend etc.-April 16,1992 The Michigan Daily -Weekend a memorable opera this season. The two University productions were overdone: Albert Herring had too much staging, and Barber of Seville tried to update the story into Italian '50s television. Not for us. Best Classical Performance: Chicago Symphony Orchestra This was the most recent University Musical Society offering, but Baren- boim's crowd-pleasin' all-Strauss program showed he actually can conduct. One of the coolest things we've seen in a long time was the third encore of "Chicago." Glad to see a sense of humor still exists. For those with a short memory: Murray Perahia and Mariss Jansons' Oslo Philharmonic were at their finest as well. Best Halloween Event: The University Symphony Orchestra From the beginning to the very end, the Annual Halloween Concert was hilarious. With the decapitated harpists, the string section dancing to "Thriller," and the Rocky Horror section, the concert promised to be creative and scary. Musical selec- tions ranged from the Symphonie Fantastique to the Night on Bald Mountain. Not enough room to do more than just mention the spider from the ceiling, the audience in costumes, and the fabulous percus- sion ensemble. Ooh, scary! Best Local Drama: Comedy Company You're joking, right? Well, you readers elected it. Comedy Company has made some format changes over the years, but not enough to warrant calling it drama. Marat/Sade is more like it - the University Players ver- sion with twisted sexual humor - showing how talented theater stu- dents can act out dementia. More Fun Than Bowling, produced by the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, fea- tured two University students in a night full of dramatic human rela- tionships, and also has our vote for the best drama. Best Local Comedy: Highly Improvable This fab five started out in the back of Jason's Sandwich shop ("Just like dinner theater!" we exclaimed) and climbed the ladder to comedic ge- nius. Deb, Tom, Matt, Dave and Mike are the happy gang who bonded over carafes and other audi- ence-inspired comedy. Something that hasn't been seen in these parts for some time now, this improv troupe offers a different sort of com- edy than that seen on stages. Best Warm Furry Moment: Men's Glee Club Spring Concert Sesame Street's Bob McGrath, who most of us feel as if we've known all of our lives, came out for the second half of a terrific concert and, begin- ning in Kermit the Frog's voice, sang "The Rainbow Connection," dedicated to the late Jim Henson. It was also nostalgic to hear the gradu- ating senior Clubbers singing "I'll Ne'er Forget My College Days," as well as other Michigan favorites with the 1967 "Around the World Tour" Men's Glee Club. Hail. a Whether the dorm cafeteria gets you down, or you're grabbing a bite to eat between classes, Ann Arbor has more than enough food. Here's a list of your votes for the best. Cappuccino: Espresso Royale CaffM Since opening its doors, Espresso Royale has mastered the art of the beatnik coffee house, with delicious drinks. Caffd Fino, housed in the Union, was voted second place, but the plate glass at Espresso gives the drinker the advantage of being seen while drinking a double cap. Burgers: Blimpyburger How can you resist the (reopened) place, with thoughts of the Popeye character not far from the name? Load up on the condiments; best to get a fried vegetable platter on the side. L.A. Cafe, with its more so- phisticated appeal lost by a few votes, a well-deserved second. It's a question of palate. Pizza: Cottage Inn & Backroom (tie) You voted for Cottage Inn. You voted for the Backroom. Pro-Cottage Inn: sesame seed crusts; the deep dish pizza is 'Chicago' minus the five-hour drive. Pro-Backroom: down the block from 611 Church/Rick's; great, hot pizza at only a dollar a slice. Isn't it nice that you can have both? Hotdogs: Chicago Dog House It'll always be Red Hots (from the original name of Red Hot Lovers) to us. If you're craving a 'dog, it's the quintessential college place for franks with off-beat music, crowded booths, and as many condiments as you a Wiene ballot Statea Cheap It's eid ers or pitche much parties Deli: Z Pushy has nic an ove and the which Dough Sandw Zingei Amy Heath and Steve Memran battled it out in the bathtub in Marat/Sade. r U iq CfhiaQt Ll -fejRf g fg RESTAURANT ANr HONYTM.URIOLJUaly Is it a #3 Grandma Belle's Best or a #47 Maria's Hollywood Minute?
