Solid pitching was the difference last weekend when Minnesota shut down the Wolverines to take the last three games of their series. Michigan took a cue from the Gophers yesterday, silencing the Siena Heights bats with strong pitch- ing from both the starters and bullpen en route to 7-0 and 3-1 vic- tories, evening its record at 17-17. Frosh Ron Hollis (2-0), last year's Mr. Baseball in the state of Michigan, took the mound in his first career start for the Wolverines. His inexperience didn't show through, however, as Hollis blew by the Saints with seven strikeouts, al- lowing no runs and only five hits. On top of that, Hollis did not walk a single batter yesterday after register- ing four walks in three previous in-, nings of action. "I might have been a little ner- vous at first, but I was just hoping to go out there and throw strikes," Hollis said. "I was getting ahead in the count pretty well, and I had con- trol of my curves and off-speed pitches. I think I did a good job of keeping them off balance." Though he didn't need it, the Wolverine offense gave Hollis plenty of breathing room, collecting nine hits and scoring in four of the six innings. Scott Timmerman led off the game with a single and Matt Copp reached on an error, putting runners at first and second. Two batters later, Toby Brzoznowski smacked a single to notch his seventh and eighth RBI of the season. The Wolverines added another in the second, and then, after a 1-2-3 inning for Hollis, pushed two more runs across as Copp knocked home Ron Goble and Ryan Van Overen. Chad Chapman finished the scor- ing, sending a Dennis Szczechowski (4-6) pitch well over the centerfield- er's flailing arms to score runs six and seven for Michigan. Aaron Toth entered the game in relief of Hollis, giving up a walk to the first batter he faced but settling down quickly to strike out three of his own. Although the game two may have been closer, lefty Chris Newton (3- 2) kept Michigan in control for nearly all of his six innings of work, facing more than four batters in an inning only twice. "I felt pretty comfortable out there. I hadn't pitched well lately, so it was nice to help the team," Newton said. "The defense played well for us."' Indeed, the defense did play well - except for the fifth inning, that is, when the Saints scored their only run of the day with the help of two key errors by the Wolverines. Newton walked Bob Szczechow- ski, the brother of the game one loser, to start the inning. An infield grounder advanced the runner to second with only one out. Errors by Copp and Timmerman on routine grounders loaded the bases for Siena Heights. The Saints' Matt Clendennin hit a shallow sin- gle, one of only three hits in the game for Siena, to score Siena's run. The Michigan infield redeemed itself with a double play to end the inning. Center fielder Steve Buerkel picked up three more hits, notching the 48th multiple-hit game of his ca- reer, and also stole three bases to move into a seventh-place tie on the Wolverine career steals list. Kevin Crociata chipped in with a single and double to give the Wolverines nine hits for the game. Closer Todd Marion pitched the seventh, making quick work of the Saints on two groundouts and an See BASEBALL, Page 9 1 , # A Y4 ' i t d, l: The ffie o theVic Prsidet fr Suden Afair Michig an's Ryan Van Oeveren heads back to the dugout after striking out in the second g ame of Michig an's doubleheader against Siena Heights. The Wolverines (8-2 Big Ten, 21-15 overall) started out slowly in the first game but managed to defeat the Spartans, 6-2. Junior Kari Kunnen led Michigan with two RBI and two runs. Kunnen went 2-for-2, including a triple in the third inning which drove in senior Stacey Heams, to help the Wolverines come out on top. Rookie pitcher Kelly Kovach, who was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, recorded the victory to raise her record to 10-5. She allowed four hits while striking out six and walking one. "Kelly definitely deserved it," coach Carol Hutchins said of the Big Ten honor. "She had three wins against Penn State and has really turned it on. The pitching staff was struggling in the start but now we're doing better." The Wolverines blasted the Spartans (1-9, 2-20) in five innings in game two, 11-0. Sophomore pitcher Julie Clarkson pitched four perfect innings but was relieved by junior Kelly Forbis to start the fifth. "Julie was outstanding," Hutch- ins said, "but we really wanted to get Kelly on the mound." Forbis got the job done, allowing one hit while striking out two in the See SOFTBALL, Page 9 Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society, was founded to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.
