A Page 10-The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 9,1992 Michigan athletes take honors [£ from staff reports Two University of Michigan stu- dent-athletes, cross country/track ju- nior Amy Buchholz (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) and field hockey junior Katherine "Katie" Thomas (Toledo, OH/Ottawa Hills HS), have been selected as co-recipients of the 1992 Michigan M-Women Athletic Achievement Award. The award was presented at the women's athlet- ics Champions Reception April 5. Presented by the Michigan M- Women Association, the annual award recognizes the Wolverine fe- male student-athlete(s) achieving in- dividual athletic successes which reflect positively on her team and the university. Nominations for the award came from each of the 10 Michigan women's athletics coach- ing staffs, while the award recipients were selected by the M-Women Association. Buchholz is a distance runner who competes for both the Michigan cross-country and track teams. She finished 24th in the 1991 NCAA National Cross Country Champion- ships to become Michigan's sixth cross country All-American and lead the Wolverines to a 14th-place showing at nationals. On the track, Buchholz ran to a sixth-place 5000- meters finish at the 1992 Big Ten Indoor Track Championships. The junior kinesiology major earned Academic All-Big Ten Conference honors in both cross country and track during the 1991-92 year. Thomas, a forward on the Wolverine field hockey team, led Michigan scoring in 1991, notching 7 goals and adding 7 assists for 21 season points. Thomas tied for fourth in final Midwest Collegiate Field Hockey Conference scoring statistics (17 points), helping Michigan to a fourth-place league finish (9-9/4-6 MCFHC). A U-M tri- captain, she was named to the All- MCFHC Second Team. Thomas, a junior political science major, is a member of the 1991 MCFHC All- Academic and the 1992 Big Ten Conference Academic At-Large teams. The Big Ten Conference an- nounced today that two University of Michigan gymnasts, first-year students Brian Winkler (Sarasota, FL/Riverview HS) and Beth Wymer (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview HS), were named Athlete of the Month for their performances in March. Winkler won the Big Ten floor exercise title with a 9.825 score and tied for third on the vault with an average score of 9.47 5 at the confer- ence championships (March 27-28). He finished the season with high mark of 9.90 on the vault, which is the best in 1992 Big Ten competi- tion. The frosh also had a 9.90 in the floor exercise which was tied as the conference season's best with Michigan State's Paul Dackermann. Winkler led Michigan with a team- high of 9.55 on the parallel bars and 56.95 in the all-around. He will be participating in the NCAA Eastern Regional Championship (April 11) in Iowa City, Iowa. Wymer won the Big Ten all- around title (March 27-28), setting the Big Ten all-around record of 39.00 points. She was named the Big Ten Freshmen and Gymnast of the Year, and earned All-Big Ten hon- ors. Wymer was the Big Ten cham- pion of the uneven bars (9.90) and floor exercise (9.875), setting cham- pionship records in each event. She is ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 3 in the Central Region in the all- around, and holds the top spot on the Big Ten 1992 "Best Performances" list on the uneven bars, balance beam and all-around. Wymer will compete at the NCAA Central Regional meet (April 11) and the NCAA National Championship meet (April 23-25). Michigan runner Ric helle Webb was one of the top performers at the Texas Relays last weekend. Webb and the Wolverine squad will compete in Charlottesville, Va. this weekend against teams from Virginia, Kent, and Rutgers. Pistons bury PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mark Aguirre came off a scoreless game to finish with 22 points Wednesday night, leading the Detroit Pistons to an 89-71 victory over Philadelphia, further dimming the 76ers' playoff hopes. Aguirre, who didn't score in the Pistons' victory over New York Tuesday night, hit nine of 14 shots, including two 3-pointers. He scored 15 points in the second period, when the Pistons outscored the 76ers 31- 10 for a 47-32 halftime lead. Hersey Hawkins scored 25 points and Charles Barkley 22 for Philadelphia, which lost its eighth game in 11 starts and fell three games behind New Jersey and Atlanta for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. 76ers, 89-71 Joe Dumars scored 16 points and Dennis Rodman had 13 points and 16 rebounds for Detroit, which won its third straight game and improved its road record to 22-17. The 76ers led 22-16 after one quarter before Aguirre and Bill Laimbeer led the Pistons' second- quarter surge. Laimbeer had eight points and seven rebounds in the second period. Detroit led 50-38 with 8:34 left in the third period before a 13-5 run closed Philadelphia to 55-51. But the Pistons responded with an 11-2 burst to lead 66-53 at the end of three pe- riods. A 10-4 run, including six points by Dumars, extended the Pistons' lead to 76-59. A jumper by Dumars with 4:55 left made it 80-61. by Rich Mitvalsky Daily Sports Writer Just as the weather warms up in Ann Arbor, the women's track teams will pack up and head to the East Coast. However, the trip should be strictly business. The Wolverines head out to Charlottesville, Va., on Friday, to face the Virginia Cavaliers, along with squads from Kent and Rutgers, in a quadrangle track meetthis weekend. Although the Wolverines don't know too much about their ri- vals, assistant coach Mike McGuire expects a strong showing from each team. "Virginia has a tremendous his- tory and a strong tradition in wom- en's track," McGuire said. "We don't face too many teams from Kent's region, so we don't know much about their team, but the meet should be strong across the board considering teams from different ar- eas of the country are represented." Outstanding performers from last weekend's meet in Texas included sophomore Richelle Webb and frosh Carrie Stewart. Stewart, a Wolverine basketball player in the winter, placed fifth in the javelin throw and was the only individual to place among the top six in any event at the Texas relays. Both are expected to contribute largely this weekend. "Carrie had a very good meet, and she is a scorer who we didn't have in the winter season," McGuire said. "But we were especially pleased to see Richelle open up in the 100-meter under 12 seconds (11.98)." A few noteworthy stories will also unfold during the meet this weekend. Wolverine junior Molly McClimon will make her first return to the track since injuring her knee 15 months ago. McClimon returns as Michigan's fastest 1500-meter run- ner, and while she has regained her conditioning, this weekend will de- termine exactly how much progress she has made. "Molly has undergone several knee operations, and has been train- ing well with us," McGuire said. "But, there is a big difference be- tween training and racing shape. She will run the 3000 this weekend, just for some competition experience." Senior middle distance runner Carrie Yates has perhaps more of an interest in Virginia's team than other Wolverines, considering her twin sister runs the hurdles for the Cavaliers. But Yates, a member of Michigan's outstanding two-mile re- lay, and her teammates should expe- rience considerable competition from Virginia's two-mile relay, as both qualified for the winter national championships.
