The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, April 7, 1992 - Page 11 Women golfers bottom out Consecutive 14th-place finishes frustrate Blue linksters BASEBALL NOTEBOOK J by Dan Linna Daily Sports Writer Back-to-back 14th-place finishes are not what Michigan women's golf coach Sue LeClair had envisioned when the Wolverines kicked off their spring season one week ago. However, that is just what LeClair has 'seen as Michigan fol- lowed up its last place finish at South Carolina by finishing 14th in o the 16-team Indiana Women's Invitational Sunday. The Wolverines (353-350-348- 1051) outdistanced Bowling Green (1057) and Notre Dame, but trailed Indiana (958) by 93 strokes. Min- nesota (969), Northern Illinois (982), Penn State (987), and Ohio State (989) rounded out the top five. "I'm a little disappointed," Le- Clair said. "We started to hit the ball better. We need to get more work on our chipping and putting." Junior Wendy Bigler shot a 252 (87-85-80) to pace Michigan. Senior Kristin Beilsten came in at 267 (87- 90-90) as did senior Erica Zonder (88-89-90) and junior Tricia Good (91-86-90). Rookie Jenny Zim- merman's 272 (91-93-88) closed out the scoring for the Wolverines. "Wendy is getting it together," LeClair said. "Her 80 on Sunday was a very good round." Although LeClair said she was disappointed with Michigan's per- formance, it was not totally unex- 'We need to get more work on our chipping and putting.' - Sue LeClair Women's golf coach pected, as the Wolverines have had little time to practice because of in- clement weather. The Wolverines fared well in the fall season and expectations are run- ning high for this spring season. However, since its spring break trip to Florida, except for two tourna- ments, Michigan has seen little but the inside of a golf dome. The domes help in keeping loose during the winter months, but the confines give little indication of how one's swing is progressing. The in- door environment also provides far less than a complete practice as chipping and putting are not possible. One of the Wolverines' goals in Indiana was to play their best and hope the weather would cooperate. However, even this seemed too much to ask. "The weather was terrible," Le- Clair said. "I thought (Indiana) was going to call it after the first 18 on Saturday. It was really cold, windy and raining with snow mixed in." Michigan has this week off be- fore traveling to Purdue the follow- ing weekend. Then, after another week off, the Wolverines will com- pete in the Big Ten Championships, May 1-3. Michigan took its NCAA manda- tory day off yesterday and LeClair will have her team on the fairways the rest of the week before playing 18-holes Saturday and Sunday. "I hope we will be ready by the time we go to Purdue," LeClair said. "We just hope the weather holds so we can get things going again." by Tim Rardin Daily Baseball Writer After its rugged 1-10 start to the season, the Michigan baseball team has now won 10 of its last 14 games to push its overall record to 11-14, and 6-2 in the Big Ten. With a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Ferris State tomorrow, and a single game Wednesday at 3 p.m. with Detroit, the Wolverines can expect to finally reach the .500 mark. Why? Very simple. Michigan boasts a 16-2 career record against the Bulldogs and a 60-20-1 mark against the Titans. On top of that, Wolverine coach Bill Freehan has not lost to either team in his previous two seasons. HOME SWEET HOME: For a while, it seemed as if the Wolverines would never get a chance to play in the friendly confines of Fisher Stadium. After 19 straight road games, Michigan's scheduled home opener against Saginaw Valley was canceled because of snow. But a 'M' baseball looks for .500 week later, the weather cooperated and the Wolverines responded with a pair of victories over Eastern Michigan and Toledo. Michigan now has time to get comfortable with a nine-game homestand. GREAT SCOTT: Junior second baseman Scott Timmerman earned Big Ten Player-of-the-Week hon- ors last week, after going 8-for-12 in four games against Purdue. Timmerman, a switch-hitter, owns the fourth- best batting average on the team at .311, and stands at .321 in the Big Ten. Senior co-captain Steve BuerkeL leads the way for Michigan with a .362 average. FROSH START: Freehan said he has been pleased' with the contributions of some of his first-year players of late. Rodney Goble is tied for the team lead in RBI with 12 in only 46 at bats. Scott Niemic keyed. Michigan's victory over Toledo last week with a double and a triple and two RBIs, and pitcher Heath Murray leads the staff with three victories. ii Don't Miss Sorority Fall Rush! 5ororit Fl Forma/!
