Rolston's goal gives Lakers championship ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - With just a quick flick of Brian Rolston's wrist, Duane's world crumbled Sat- urday night. Rolston snapped a 3-3 tie with 4:52 remaining against Duane Der- ksen, fooling Wisconsin's record- setting goaltender and lifting Lake Superior State to a 5-3 victory over the Badgers for the NCAA Division I hockey championship. Rolston walked out from behind the Wisconsin net and flicked a shot past Derksen before he could react. "I just came around and was looking for my linemates, and their goalie looked like he was playing the pass, so I just put it by him," Rolston said. He was right. "I thought he would wrap it around or dish it across, and I was going to try to stuff him," said Derksen, who was trying for his 80th career victory. "I was up and I should have been down. It didn't work out that way." Lake Superior (30-9-4) rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit, foil- ing the Badgers' drive for a sixth national title. The game featured 19 power plays, 11 for the Lakers. When it was over Wisconsin (27-14- 2) badgered the game officials ve- hemently, especially referee Tim McConaghy. "He dictated the game, not the outcome necessarily, but the flow and everything else," said Wisconsin center Doug Macdonald, who re- ceived a minor penalty and miscon- duct in the second period, giving the Lakers a crucial advantage. "We felt in control, all of a sud- den I'm sitting for 12 minutes. Then it's 5-on-3 after 5-on-3. This is a championship game, you don't see that at any level." The Lakers were quick to take advantage of the opportunity. It only took Paul Constantin 15 seconds to score his 21st goal of the season and sixth in three playoff games. Wisconsin still led 2-1, but the Badgers were reeling. "They really had the pressure on. We killed penalties for so long in the second period," Wisconsin coach Jeff Sauer said. "It was just a hard- fought game between two great teams. When we were down five players to three, it was tough to come back." Lake Superior evened the score with just six seconds left in the sec- ond period. Defenseman Tim Hanley scored his third goal of the season when his slap shot from the right point deflected past Derksen and high into the net. Defenseman Michael Smith gave the Lakers their first lead 4:16 into the third period with another power- play goal, and Jay Ness added an empty-netter with two seconds re- maining to seal the Lakers' second national title in five years. They de- feated St. Lawrence 4-3 in overtime in 1988eat Lake Placid to win their first title. 0 Lake Superior's Paul Constantin slips the puck past Michigan State goalie Mike Gilmore in the Lakers' NCAA semifinal game against the Spartans. Beamon leads M over WMU MSU by Mike Hill Daily Sports Writer Payback was served yesterday when No. 1 singles Kalei Beamon of the Michigan women's tennis team avenged her early season loss to Michigan State's Alicia Leone. Beamon, a native of East Lansing, fell to Leone in the State of Michigan Tournament held in Senior Editor Josh Dubow Night Editors Ryan Herrington Ken Sugiura Assistant Night Editors Brett Forrest Greg Richardson Chad Safran TJim Spolar Pervis Ellison Louisville, 1986 Howard Dullmar Stanford, 1942 Kalamazoo last October. But a grueling three hour, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6, victory in front of her hometown fans made the loss a distant memory. "Kalei just played a great match," coach Bitsy Ritt said. "It was a nice win for her since she had lost a three-setter to Leone earlier and also because she had thought about attending Michigan State." The victory completed an 8-1 pasting of the Spartans (2-5 Big Ten, 8-8 overall). The Wolverines (4-3, 9- 7) also defeated Western Michigan (8-6) 6-3 Saturday afternoon. Jaimie Fielding continued to im- press at No. 3 singles in her rookie season by coming back from a set down to upend the Broncos' Shan- non Condon, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. Senior Amy Malik knocked off Cindy Tur- ner, 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 5 position. Beamon had a slightly easier time. She didn't give up a game in her two-set triumph. The Wolverine's extra work in. doubles seemed to have paid off against Western. The No. 1 com- bination of Kim Pratt and Fielding defeated the Broncos, 6-0, 7-6. And the No. 3 team of Freddy Adam and Malik took home a three-set victory. Michigan's only loss to the Spar- tans came at the No. 2 doubles pos- ition. Co-captain Malik hopes the victories will help bring back some of the team's confidence that was lost in last weekend's 8-1 loss to Illinois. "It's a nice change of pace," she said. "I think things are looking good now. (The victories) will give us a lot of confidence going into next weekend's matches against Iowa and Minnesota. Those will be really important matches, like all Big Ten matches are." Though pleased with the per- formance, Ritt still is not convinced her team has made a turnaround. "The team played well and the players fought hard," Ritt said. "But neither Western or Michigan State is the caliber team that Illinois is. So it's hard to say whether we have improved that much from last week. But still, we should gain confidence from these matches and the players should feel good about this weekend." 0 --------------------- - - ------------------- ------------- ------- ---- - -------------- ---------- - ------- Michigan Daily Athlete-of-the-Week -- - ---------- - --- ------------ I , LL, I h Michigan's women's tennis team completed a successful weekend with a 6-3 victory over Western Michigan and an 8-1 triumph over Michigan State.
