Brilliant film ignored due to it's
any film critics have praised Agnieszka
Holland's Europa, Europa as one of the
year's best movies. The German-made film is
based on the autobiography of Solomon Perel,
who, as an adolescent, survived the Holocaust by
posing as a German. Ironically, Perel won great
favor among the Nazis and soon found himself at
an elite school for Hitler youth. The film digs into
tlie depth of German racism and eugenicism, as
well as the fascist propensities of the German
psyche.
Despite the importance and the cinematic qual-
ity of Europa, Europa, the film has not been
submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences for consideration as 1991's best for-
eign film.
The film is being withheld from nomination
because of the sensitive nature of its content. The
Academy's rules provide that a country can submit
a single entry for the foreign film category.
The German Export Film Union, a quasi-gov-
ernmental agency responsible for such submis-
sions, claims that no German films are worthy of
the nomination this year. Obviously, this is not the
case. The film union should know better than to use
its power to suppress ideas.
Perel's story is a remarkable one, and the movie
is a triumph. The final scene in the movie is a
stirring shot of the real Solomon Perel, in Israel -
his current home - singing the prayer Hinei
Matovuh Manayim. This scene has the power to
move a theater full of viewers to tears.
The Germans are clearly making a conscious
effort to overlook Europa, Europa. The film has,
already been named best foreign film by New York
and Boston film critics and the National Board of

portrayal of truth
Review. If submitted to the Academy, the film
would be a shoe-in for the foreign film Oscar.
Nevertheless, Germans hope that the film will
pass by unnoticed by the rest of the world. The
shame of the Holocaust still boils in the hearts and
minds of Germans.
After the Second World War, The Federal Re-
public of Germany gained legitimacy among the
nations of the world by accepting the democratic
government which the Allies imposed upon it, and
by sending large aid packages to Israel. Despite
these efforts to exorcise its past evils, factions in
Germany, two years after reunification, are still
unable to confess the most horrifying elements of
its history.
It is not enough that Germany now has a strong
democracy and good relations with Israel. Today,
the streets of Berlin are still full of spray-painted
swastikas, and slogans like "Nazis rise!" If the
German people ever hope to exorcise the ghost of
Nazism, they must expose their perverse, racist,
and eugenicist history to the rest of the world.
Part of the legacy of great tragedies like the
Holocaust is the idea that the world should never
forget what happened. There is a fear that forget-
ting the past means that its tragedies will be re-
peated in the future.
A film with the power of Europa, Europa tries
to ensure that the past is not forgotten. The German
government cannot deny the perversions of their
past. Europa Europa deals with these German
perversions, and lives up to the highest levels of
cinematic genius. Germans should not try to hide
this important movie. The film is coming to the
Ann Arbor theater next month. Everyone should
see it.
