For many swimming teams, the championship meet is the highlight of the season, but the Wolverines had already reached their season high at the1992 Olympic Trials. Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek wasn't surprised with their finish be- cause the team had spent most of their energy and mental focus on performing well at the Olympic Trials. "They could not perform up to their best," Urbanchek said. "But the NCAAs were not the most important part of the year for us. Olympic trials only come around once in a while. The NCAA meet happens every year." Michigan's star frosh, Gustavo Borges, a 1992 Olympian swimmer for his home country of Brazil, was the only Wolverine who has been focusing his energy on the NCAA meet all season. Borges' work payed off, as he was the only individual swimmer for Michigan to place first in an event. Borges took both the 100 (1:34.66), and 200 (1:34.66) yard freestyle events. He also fin- ished fourth in the 50 freestyle (19.80). "This morning I was swimming pretty good in the water," Borges said of his win in the 200 freestyle. "I tried to put a good effort in my first 50 to stay with the front group. After the third 50, I saw I was ahead, so I just closed my eyes and went for it." The Brazilian took the wind out of ten-time title winner, Iowa's Arthur Wojdat. The Iowa senior fin- ished just one one-hundredth of a ish 16th in the 200, and 22nd in the 500 freestyle. Stanford finished the meet in first place with 632 points, almost dou- bling Texas' second-place finish of 356. UCLA took third (310), fol- 'We were hoping we could stay in the top six. But we put most of our time and mental and physical energy into the Olympics' - Men's swimming coach Jon Urbanchek : Michigan swimmer Brian Gunn was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished second in this weekend's NCAA Championships. second behind Borges (1:34.67) in the 200 freestyle. Urbanchek was pleased with Borges' performance. "It was a pretty exciting event for Gustavo. He has been focused on the NCAAs and he hasn't had any dis- tractions," Urbanchek said. Wolverines Rodney VanTassel, Borges, Tom Hay and Noel Strauss captured sixth in the 400-yard freestyle. Michigan's relay team of Steve' Bigelow, Steve West, Hay and Borges took seventh in the 400-yard medley, while the 800-yard freestyle relay composed of VanTassell, Kevin Glass, Brian Gunn and Borges finished second. Swimming individually for the Wolverines was Brian Gunn, who finished eighth in the 200 butterfly, and senior Eric Bailey, who finished 10th in the 200 butterfly. Teammate Steven Duttenhofer, placed right be- hind Bailey with a 22nd-place finish. FroshWest turned in a 14th place finish in the 200 breaststroke and 22nd in the 100 breaststroke. VanTassell was disqualified in the 100 freestyle, but came back to fin- lowed by California (265.5), Arizona (238), Minnesota (217.5) and Southern Cal (211). Michigan, with 184 points, easily outdistanced its closest competitor, Tennessee (150). "We were hoping we could stay in the top six, with the person (Borges) we had," Urbanchek said. "But we put most of our time and, mental and physical energy into the Olympics. We made our bed, now we have to lie in it." Urbanchek is looking forward to next year's season. Joining the team will be first-year student Ray Sharp, who has already qualified to com- pete in the Olympics. Also return- ing will be the red-shirted, Eric Wunderlich and Eric Namesnik. Namesnik just missed qualifying in0 two events at the Olympic trials, placing third in both events. "The team has very good poten- tial," Urbanchek said. "With Sharp and the two freshmen we dropped this year, we should be really good." YJ ;{"%::. i...:: 'r.'r:..:...:. However, after the four- game set, the Wolverines had man- aged to equal their season total, win- ning the last three games of the weekend to move their season record to 6-13, and 3-1 in the Big Ten. In Saturday's doubleheader, the Wolverines received two strong per- formances from its starting pitchers, but could only muster one victory in the pair of 3-2 games. The first game played stage to a solid pitching duel between Michigan righthander Eric Heintschel and the Boilermakers' Sherald Clinkscales. Both pitchers worked identical complete-game four-hitters, but two wildpitches in the sixth-inning by Heintschel would be the difference, as Purdue col- lected two runs to break the 1-1 tie. The Wolverines loaded the bases in the seventh and final inning, but could only get one run across. Lefty Chris Newton started the nightcap for Michigan, but would need the help of Bryan Santo, who earned his first victory of the season, and Todd Marion, who recorded his 16th career save to break Greg Everson's Wolverine record, in shut- ting down the Boiler bats. In Sunday's game, Michigan sent righthander Dennis Konuszweski, w who was looking for his first victory of the season, to the mound. The righthander responded, pitching the complete seven innings, while giving up only three hits and two runs in the Wolverines' 4-2 victory. The Michigan bats found new life, as three Wolverines collected two hits apiece. Timmerman went 2- for-3 with an RBI, while Kevin Crociata, who also had an RBI, and Scott Niemiec both added a pair of singles. The Wolverine offense continued its resurgence in the second game Sunday, with a six-run sixth-inning to put the game out of reach en route to their 9-6 victory.
