Talks with Duderstadt to air this week

by Purvi Shah
Daily Administration Reporter
University officials say that
resident James Duderstadt's first
fireside chat on undergraduate edu-
cation generated so much light that
a new student life program will air
on Community Access Television
this week beginning today.
The second installment of a
three-part series of "Conversations
with President Duderstadt," filmed
March 17 in the Martha Cook
Lounge, features a round-table fo-
um on student life with Duderstadt,
University Student Affairs officials
and four seniors.
Students' social life was consid-
ered in the context of factors such as
University size and decentralization,
city relations and alternatives to stu-
dent events with alcohol.

Another discussion topic in-
cluded what students would do if
they were University President for a
day.
"I said the first thing I would do
is get a tour of his house," said
Jennifer Eshelman, Residence Hall
Association President. "I also said
that I would try to be a more acces-
sible person. It would be nice to see
(Duderstadt) walking through the
Diag, and say 'Hi, Jim."'
Duderstadt said the discussion
was a way of drawing together the
University community while dis-
playing it to a broader audience.
"There were some very good
ideas that came out on the table. I'm
sure we heard them loud and clear
and I suspect that a lot of other peo-
ple who see this program will too,"
Duderstadt said in a news release.

While Eshelman agreed that the
experimental chats provide a new
opportunity for viewing the
University, she added the discourses
were only the beginning point for
change.
"I think it's both for students and
community people. It's sort of a new
look into the University," she said.
"It is a good place to show that there
is some sort of a dialogue going on."
Shirley Clarkson, Director of
Presidential Communications, said
the first program was successful
enough to consider planning in the
summer for future programs next
year.
"People really seemed to like the
idea. We really did get a good re-
sponse. So did cable," she said. "It's
just an experiment. It's not a substi-

tute for anything."
Clarkson added the administra-
tion would attempt to get a copy of
the forum placed in the UGLi for
popular viewing.
The next "Conversations with
President Duderstadt" will deal with
the University's budget outlook. In
addition to Duderstadt, various
University budget officials will be
on hand.
Conversing with Duderstadt and
Eshelman were Vice President for
Student Affairs Maureen Hartford,
Associate Vice President for Student
Affairs Royster Harper, former
Inter-Fraternity Council President
Matthew Commers, Delta Sigma
Theta sorority President Lisa Harrell
and Michigan Union Board of
Representatives Chair Priti Marwah.
