The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 27,1992- Page 7 IMPLANTS Continued from page 1 brought up." However, the hospital has con- tinued to use saline implants - which have silicone jackets surrounding saline solution. Harrison said the number of such implants have dropped because of the difficulty in obtaining the saline. "Manufacturers can't keep up with the numbers of people demanding saline," Harrison said. Wilkins said the saline implants were not guaranteed to be safer than the silicone-gel implants. "Even the :saline might have some of those ;!rawbacks," he said. "That issue has not really been raised in the press." The FDA will examine saline implants next year. Wilkins said the transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap, a form of surgery re- moving a flap of stomach muscle into the chest area, was "preferred standard of procedure," but was not a viable option for all patients. The TRAM flap is used mostly for breast reconstruction after mas- tectomy due to breast cancer. Wilkins said the operation could take up to eight hours and is not an option for cosmetic and augmenta- tion purposes. Wilkins said using saline pro- duced similar results to silicone-gel for cosmetic and augmentation pur- poses. But for reconstructive surgery after mastectomy or to replace sili- cone-gel implants, Wilkins said the result was "not as good and not as natural in contour and texture," since saline was made for cosmetic surgery purposes. Regarding the implant contro- versy, Wilkins said patients con- sidering implants receive FDA re- ports and transcripts and articles on the pros and cons of implants. Study addresses lack of women doctorates by Karen Pier Daily Graduate Schools Reporter Although women make up more than 50 percent of the population, they only receive 18 percent of math and physics Ph.D.s nationally, even though an equal number of men and women obtain undergraduate de- grees in these subjects, according to a recent study conducted by the Alfred Sloan Foundation. The foundation studied the University mathematics and physics departments, "to fill out what is known about the experiences of women and men in mathematics and science programs at a major research university." At the University, seven of the 18 Ph.D. candidates expected to gradu- ate this year are women - nearly 40 percent. Mathematics Chair Donald Lewis said, "We recruited some very, bright women." The mathematics department is also "trying a whole mess of things in the next few years," Lewis said. Physics Chair Homer Neal said there are several women Ph.D. can- didates, and four female faculty members in his department. However, he acknowledged there is still work to be done in this area. "We are making very significant progress, but we still have a ways to go," he said. Carol Hollenshead, director of the Center of Education for Women, also said plans are under way to change to help support women in mathematics and science. The study found the actual num- ber of all degrees awarded in science and math is decreasing, but women are getting more of a piece of the pie. The percentage of women getting degrees is small, but the proportion of women to males getting doctor- ates in mathematics, science and en- gineering is improving, according to the National Research Council Survey of Earned Doctorates. Lewis said some women do not continue in graduate studies due to the lack of jobs. "Other studies have shown when women become em- ployable, women will stop their studies and get a job ... They'll get a job and do very well, but they stop themselves from reaching their full potential," Lewis said. According to the study, women also report being patronized or ignored in the classroom. Lewis said "professors who re- ally take an interest" can help under- graduates decide to go to graduate study. - The study listed a number of ideas to help women in their pursuit in mathematics and sciences -- in- cluding calling on professors to en- courage women students, since this praise seems to be a key in keeping women in their pursuit of a graduate degree. The study also said women see mathematics as something done ac- cording to rules and tend not to seek alternative methods; the study ad- vised that mathematics classes should more strongly emphasize innovative thinking.
