Wrestlers pinned at NCAAs Gilbert's All-American performance not enough for Wolverines by Tim Rardin Daily Sports Writer OKLAHOMA CITY - After capturing the 12th-place spot at the NCAA Championships last year, the 14th-ranked Michigan wrestling team fell well short of that mark this time around, finishing in 25th this weekend. Michigan's Joey Gilbert (134) was the lone Wolverine to place in the top eight of his weight class, to regain his All-American status. The Wolverines began the tour- nament with five wrestlers in compe- tition. However, Jason Cluff (126), Brian Harper (150), and Jehad Hamdan (190), all first-time quali- fiers, were knocked out early, while All-Americans Gilbert and Lanny Green (177) each advanced into Friday's quartefinals with a pair of victories. Michigan coach Dale Bahr saw the effects of national champi- onship pressure on his young wrestlers. "It is hard on those guys the first time out," Bahr said. "You look at the bright lights and the number of people, and it's kind of tough on them, especially in their first matches." The quarterfinals matched Green, the 8th seed, against the No. 1 seed, Rich Powers of Northern Iowa. Green fell behind early, as Powers notched two points with a quick takedown. After Green tied the score, the match remained close the rest of theway, huntil Powers finally extended his 9-7 third-period lead with four con-secutive points to record the decision, 13-7. Things would not get any easier for Green in his next match, as he had the unfortunate task of wrestling the No. 2 seed, Iowa State's Matt Johnson. After a scoreless first period, Green took the advantage with a one-point escape in the second. Johnson answered with a takedown, but Green managed another escape to notch the score at two. The match would end that way, with Johnson's riding-time advantage securing him the victory. "It was an eyelash match. Lanny was in there deep several times, but just couldn't score," Bahr said. "It was unfortunate that he drew the top two seeds back to back. Lanny has worked so hard all year, and I know he's a top eight type of wrestler." Gilbert had some problems of his own Friday, as he faced Mark Fergeson of Cornell, the No. 6 seed, who he had split with in two matches last year. Fergeson employed a slower, more controlled style to combat the more aggressive Gilbert. The strat- egy worked, as Gilbert fell, 5-3, in sudden-death overtime. "Fergeson didn't open up and wrestle like Joey likes. When a guy slows down and stays low, Joey has problems," Bahr said. "We knew it was going to be a tough match." Gilbert bounced back nicely after the loss, earning a 9-8 decision over Sam Cole of Harvard, and a 7-3 victory over Arizona State's Mike Moreno. The two victories pushed Gilbert into Saturday's consolation semifinals. In order to match his third-place finish of a year ago, Gilbert would have to get by a wrestler who he had beaten earlier in the season, 4th- seeded Bob Truby of Penn State, Saturday. History would not repeat itself, though, as Gilbert lost another heart- breaker. After a 2-2 regulation score, neither wrestler could score in the three-minute overtime session, thus sending the match into a 30-second tiebreaker. Truby choose the down position. If he got an escape, he would win, if not, Gilbert would be victorious. Gilbert's final match, the fifth- place consolation final, gave the All- American a chance to avenge an earlier loss, as he met Fergeson again. Gilbert came out more ag- gressively than he had in the previ- ous match, but Fergeson held on to another close one, 5-3, to give Gilbert All-American status with a 6th-place finish. "I should've been more aggres- sive and focused more on the first takedown. I let up a little," Gilbert said after the match. "I'm disap- pointed because I was having a real good season until now." Iowa, which finished with 149 points to Michigan's 12, dominated the championships. Led by three- time national champion Tom Brands, who earned the Outstanding Wrestler Award of the tournament, the Hawkeyes left plenty, of distance between there closest competitor, Oklahoma State which finished with 100.5 points. Penn State, Iowa State, and Ohio State rounded out the top five. ------------------------ --------- Women gymnasts vault over MSU* Michigan Daily Athlete-of-the-Week -------------- IN 11111,111 , 'I M ISS - --------------- Wknow mm WHO: Chris Webber TEAM: Men's Basketball HOMETOWN: Detroit, Ml. The romp completed the Wolverines perfect Big Ten record at 5-0, and the school record total score, sends a message to the await- ing squads at the Big Ten Championship this weekend. "This gives us an awful lot of confidence," Michigan coach Bev Fry said. "The team always performs well if they are confident." The Wolverines are riding high right now, tallying 190's or better in their last two meets. They have proven that they can score well both home and away-as they did last Sunday in Missouri. Even with the momentum, the team believes that their best scores are yet to come. "It's good to go (into Big Tens) on a high note," Laura Lundbeck said. "It gets the momentum and confidence going. This brings us one step closer to Nationals." Individually, the gymnasts have become stronger with each meet. The consistency and depth of the past, is now characterized by higher scores and outstanding perfor- mances. Beth Wymer paced the squad with her usual record-setting per- formance. Epre31192 ORENTAL OLEASE OQPURCHASE DO YOU HAVE SYMPTONS OF EXCESSIVE ANXIETY OR OBSESSIVE BEHAVIORS? by Todd Schoenhaus Daily Sports Writer When the Michigan men's gym- nastics team struggled in the early part of the season, coach Bob Darden had few worries. He knew his team would overcome inexperience and injuries to rival the nation's best. Darden was right. Since the mid way point of their season, the Wolverines have improved consid- erably, increasing their score with every meet. Saturday night at Cliff Keen Arena, the team's uphill climb reached a culmination - a new school record. In this last dual meet of the sea- son, No. 13 Michigan compiled 281.65 overall points. This score surpassed a previous school record of 278.75, set three weeks ago in California. Unfortunately for Michigan, its opponents - No. 8 Michigan State - established its own school record of 284.35.
