Miciga turitsmay boost economy with mrore traveling Associated Press Tourism in Michigan picked up in the last few months of 1991, ac- cording to a travel index that an economist says could indicate a boost this year in the state's second- largest industry. Car travel in the state was up in the third quarter of last year, proba- bly because of lower gas prices, said David Littmann, a senior economist with Manufacturers Bank, N.A. "People are doing more short- term weekend and day turnaround types of traveling; more economical ways of experiencing tourism," said Littmann, who compiles the bank's quarterly Michigan Tourism Index. In addition to car travel, the index measures airline traffic, hotel occu- pancy rates and Mackinac Bridge crossings, recording boom years of staggering growth in 1985 and 1986, Thunderbird hotel in Mackinaw City he said. The surge in car travel after two years of stagnation in the state's $20 billion tourism industry is "very typical of the index when the econ- omy is soft but turning around," Littmann said. If things are improving, Kelly Weeks hasn't seen it yet. Weeks manages the Best Western and occasionally minds the store at Anchor Inns on Old U.S. 31. "'85 was a real good year and then it kind of went downhill from there," she said. "Now we're getting reservations for this year. We're hoping this year will be good." Summer bookings are up 10 per- cent at the Acme Beach Motel on U.S. 31 in Grand Traverse County, said owner Ed Thiel. The motel is open from Memorial Day through October. Two years ago, things were slow at the Best Western hotel in Holland. Things have been picking up in re- cent months, said Evelyn MacVane, desk clerk and sales manager. "We've done much better this winter than last winter," MacVane said. But she added: "On the whole, the restaurant and bar have been slow." The economic pinch hasn't reached the Marine Bay Lodge Motel on Michigan 29 north of Marine City, said Manager Genevieve Shafer. "I should say - not yet," she said. "I'll have to wait until summer starts to see what happens," Shafer said. I CLAS SIFTED ADS a PERSONAL STUDENT SERVICES I I i SmallClsses. Big Scores. Score More With The Princeton Review.
