The Michigan Daily- Friday, March 20, 1992 -Page 11 RESIGNED Continued from page 1 tive in May, VanDeWege will re- main with the Athletic Department through August 31, and will coach his basketball camp this summer at Crisler. "Bud has been a loyal Michigan man for all these years and we ex- pect his continued support for the program," Associate Athletic Director Peggy Bradley-Doppes said. VanDeWege said in a released statement that his future plans are uncertain. Bradley-Doppes said that the search for a new coach is already '1 have a tremendous sense of relief that the best thing has taken place.' -Bud VanDeWege underway. The Athletic Department *has placed an advertisement in an NCAA publication and will accept 'applications until April 20. Bradley-Doppes also plans to attend the Women's Final Four in Los Angeles to speak with various ;coaches. She hopes to have a new coach by the end of June. Assistant coaches Kathy La- Barge and Nikita Lowry will re- main at Michigan, until a new *'coach is selected. He or she will have the option to replace them. "I expect that both of them would be under consideration (to stay at Michigan)," VanDeWege, "but that will be determined by the administration." "The administration was very supportive," VanDeWege said. "We had a couple of tough years, but I never felt as though I didn't have their support. "This is a very positive parting. I would have liked to have left after a better season, but I leave with no bitterness or disappointment." Tankers let good times roll Relay finishes fifth, sparks 'M' to eighth place at NCAAs by Kim DeSempelaere Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's swim- ming and diving team had a great start yesterday at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, finishing eighth overall after the first day of competition. Junior Mindy Gehrs had the best showing of the day in preliminary competition, placing seventh in the 200-yard individual medley in two minutes, 12 hundredths of a second. Gehrs fell one place in finals compe- tition, finishing eighth in 2:20:85. Stanford's Summer Sanders captured first in the event in 1:55:54. The second individual to qualify for the finals was senior Katherine Creighton, finishing 13th in the 500- yard freestyle in 4:51:26. Moving up to the 10th position, Creighton cut her time to 4:49:48. The senior freestyler has yet to compete in her best event, the 200-yard freestyle. The final Wolverine swimmers to advance to the finals qualified in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400- yard medley relay. The medley relay was made up of Gehrs, senior co- captain Jen Love, and rookies Alecia Humphrey and Lara Hooiveld. The foursome finished eighth in prelimi- nary competition in 3:43:76. Kirsten Silvester took over for Love in the finals and lead the relay to a fifth- place finish in 3:41:70. Capturing the 14th spot in pre- lims, the 200-yard freestyle relay made up of Love, Silvester, Hooiveld and senior co-captain Mic- helle Swix finished in 1:34:36. The relay bettered its time significantly, but fell one spot, to 15th, in the finals. Senior diver Lisa Cribari finished eighth from the one-meter board with 391.70 points. Chereil.Santini from SMU took first with 426.40. Day one ended with Texas on top, finishing well ahead of its clos- est competitor, Stanford. Right be- hind Stanford were SMU, Florida and UCLA, taking third through fifth place, respectively. Though Michigan is currently in eighth, the team hopes to have even better days today and tomorrow. The Wolverines expect to qualify for fi- nals competition in most events. Michigan swimmer Kirsten Silvester placed 19th in preliminary competition of the 500-m freestyle at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. 'M' spikers face Tn-State by Dan Linna Daily Sports Writer With the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Championship one week away, the Michigan men's volleyball club has been looking at this weekend's matches as a tuneup. However, the Wolverines will have little time to regroup because Saturday's tri-match with Cincinnati and Western Michigan has been canceled. Michigan will now have to do all of its fine tuning against Tri- State tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the CCRB. "We started to turn it around last weekend," Michigan coach Tom Johengen said. "We just want to con- tinue to build momentum and I'd like to see the same effort and inten- sity that we showed last weekend." Michigan doesn't know much about the Tri-State squad except that the program has recently gained var- sity status. The move means the team is able to gain more practice time and is now able to support a more experienced coaching staff. Johengen said the Tri-State play- ers are not big, but what they lack in size, they make up for in discipline and hustle, which is the cornerstone of their strong defense. "They can be really explosive if you let them get on a run," Michigan co-captain Rico Latham said. "We just want to go out, give 100 percent, and then enjoy the rest of the week- end off." The Wolverines will again be without the services of junior outside hitter Chris Peirce, who may not be ready in time for the MIVA Championships. 990 CANON COLOR LASER COPIES 24# Laser print, white, 8.5x11 Dollar Bill Copying 611 Church Phone: 665-9200 Fax: 930-2800 Golden Ke Honor Society Officer Elections (All new members who will be here next year may run for an office.)
