What about all the medical research documenting the connection between a low-fat, high- fiber diet and a longer, healthier life? "An awful lot of medical publish- ings today are terribly contradic- tory," he countered. "A lot of these doctors are tripping over each other with their findings." So don't get caught up in the furor over high-density and low- density lipoproteins. The bottom line, according to Scheller, is to be careful in choosing your grandpar- ents. "Get yourself checked out, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it," he said. More importantly, "just because one person has a problem with their cholesterol level is not reason enough for us all to go on a diet," he said. "We're turning into a nation of dietary neurotics." Yes, delicious is still "in." We're going to continue to eat great-tasting food, and we're not going to let Sandy Duncan, Nabisco or anybody else make us feel guilty about it. The Low Fat Police must be stopped be- fore they rid our dinners of every last molecule of taste, every last morsel of pleasure. word, yet is replete with details, anecdotes, explanations of motiva- tions, and uncondescending back- ground for everything he discusses. ... on a cigarette." -A chapter title of+ Lipstick Traces JS: "In many ways, (Marcus) doing what he did in his book determined how I did mine, and perhaps a little bit vice versa. I mean, I wanted to make mine very factual and very specific. Also, it is written as a story, it's meant to be a story that people want to read, that makes people swallow all the theoretical bits." "I don't feel it ... At an equal level with the fash- ion-related, contrived aspect of punk, time stands out as a key factor in the importance of the Sex Pistols and punk in Britain. Fourteen-day periods affected a generation: for example, the two-week pandemo- nium surrounding the Pistols' release of the "God Save the Queen" single. England's Dreaming emphasizes that sense of time, describes the spirit in such a fashion that words on the page can somehow recreate it. By discussing the punk scene as a whole, with noted emphasis on Mc- Laren and the Sex Pistols as the be- ginning, Savage diagrams an almost visual sense of the space and inter- twining relationships to this rush of the brevity of time. He almost flaw- lessly balances the perspectives of those interviewed recently with the excitement punk originally created. Savage, then, tells the Sex Pis- tols' story as he sees fit: guided by what he and the many people he in- terviewed remember, but tempered by punk's origin and legacy. The tenuous relationship within punk's ranks leaves a deep impression as well. ...for anybody else/ especially my- self," -"'No Feelings" The Sex Pistols JS: "It was very much my purpose in this book to let people speak through me, i.e. to interview a lot of people and quote them, properly edited, but over a whole book length, at length, i.e., it just wasn't me talk- ing all the time. "And any time the diary entries are there, it was to indicate my com- plicity in the emotional mood and in the follies and stupidities and splen- dors of that particular period. T40 p.wsC4 to be,.. "A friend of mine read some of the diary entries and said, 'Wow, these are really wanky,' and I said, 'Yes, of course they're wanky, but that's how everybody felt at the time."' AP: "Stylistically, it seems like an extended piece of journalism - ex- tensive use of quotes." JS: "The format is designed to be simple. It's not a magazine article because a lot of the writing is there to be very simple for a lot of reasons. First off, there's a lot of very com- plicated ideas being expressed and a lot of raging emotions being ex- pressed. "I'm very pleased that I ex- pressed those raging emotions and complex ideas in simple, often quite deadpan, prose. I'm very tired of overwriting. Everybody does it, I'm quite sick of it. "To me, it is much more power- ful to be quietly lethal, and there are many very, very serious things in the book which are expressed quite qui- etly, and it takes people time to real- ize that they are quite devastating." Coda JS: "I think this stuff is worth taking seriously, and there's lots of differ- ent ways of talking about music. It's a very powerful thing, and it really touches on everything. You know, I studied classical history and the whole history of art over the past two thousand years for God's sake, and the form that is happening now is popular music. And it's not the bloody novel, it's popular music. That's where it is." ft ' 5: @ STUDY FOR ONE YEAR OR FOR ONE OR TWO TERMS IN OXFORD and live with British Students HOW WISC IS DIFFERENT FROM MOST OVERSEAS PROGRAMS: " Accepted students receive admissions letters (and later transcripts) directly from a full college of Oxford University.
