'M' hitters get into the cold Baseball stays north searching for second victory by Ryan Herrington Daily Baseball Writer Contrary to popular belief, some college students actually don't mind being out of the sun. The Michigan baseball team has played 10 of its first 11 games against warm weather teams in Florida and California, and has not fared well, as nine consecutive losses and 10 all told would suggest. The Wolverines hope to end their slide this weekend when they travel to Wright State in a doubleheader Saturday and conclude their four- game weekend with single contests against Wright State and Dayton Sunday. Michigan has been at a disadvan- tage this season against its oppo- nents from the South because these schools have been able to practice since January and had played as many as 20 games prior to facing the Wolverines. The experience gained from their early start is an intangible that Michigan coach Bill Freehan feels his squad is still in the process of acquiring. "We try to look at every game as just learning more about a lot of our young people," Freehan said. "We knew we had a young, inexperienced team in a lot of cases. We've been looking to find out who can and who cannot contribute. We've been looking at the early part of this sea- son, before Big Tens started, as a time to find out who could play. Hopefully, we will have some an- swers by the time Purdue (Big Ten opener) rolls around." Freehan's job does not get any easier with the departure of out- fielders Nate Holdren and Pat Maloney, and pitcher Todd Collins. The trio will leave the team for the next few weeks to participate in spring football practice, which began on Monday. "(Losing the players) is no sur- prise," Freehan said. "However, it will hurt to the extent that both Pat Maloney and Nate Holdren were starters. Nate was hitting in the fourth position and Pat in the second position. "We're just going to have to play some other people. It's going to give us the opportunity to see what some other people can do." Freehan said that he is uncertain who will start in place of Maloney and Holdren. One of the things Freehan has stressed this week is a change in atti- tude. "What we don't want to dwell on is a record in and of itself,", Freehan said. "We just have to ad- dress the problems that we've got. "(The Big Ten championship) is not something I feel, nor does our team feel, is out of reach," he added. "We just have to work on the little things which we have failed to do thus far." 0 Registrar s Bulletin Board ANNOUNCING: The TIME SCHEDULE is now accessible from MERIT Here's how to call it up: (VT100 emulation required) 1.
