The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, March 18,1992- Page 7 'U' gives faculty members teaching e scholarship honorssx~y $LlL .z\2r'e.t'e3 n by Chastity Wilson daily Staff Reporter President James Duderstadt pre- sented the Henry Russel Lectureship and Award for 1992 - for outstand- ing scholarship and teaching - to two University faculty members yesterday. The Russel Lectureship, awarded to Political Science Prof. Robert Axelrod, is the most prestigious award the University gives to senior faculty members, while the Russel Award, which was presented to Associate Prof. of Internal Medicine James Wilson, is the highest honor for junior faculty members. Duderstadt described the event as the "intellectual highlight of the academic year" and "a chance to recognize extraordinary achievement." Axelrod, gave this year's lecture titled, "The Further Evolution of Cooperation" and spoke about how cooperation evolves between self-in- terested individuals. Preceding the lecture, Wilson, who is also chief of the division of molecular genetics at the University Medical Center, was granted his award, which includes a $1,200 stipend. Wilson, a researcher in the field of gene replacement therapy, gained media attention with a recent study in which he applied his gene transfer method to rabbits afflicted with cys- tic fibrosis, the leading life-threaten- ing genetic disorder in humans. During the lecture, Axelrod de- scribed a game called the "prisoner's dilemma," where players may choose to cooperate with another player and slightly profit, or "defect" and try to take advantage of a coop- erative opponent. Axelrod concluded the key to dealing with various competitors is to first cooperate, then mimic the competition's last actions. He coined this type of behavior "tit-for-tat" strategy. He then showed how this theory applied to historic international poli- tics and experiments with animals and simple organisms. Axelrod - considered one of his generation's most innovative politi- cal scientists - is the author of many books, including "The Evolution of Cooperation." In 1986, Axelrod was the youngest political scientist to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Then in 1987, the John and Catherine MacArthur Foundation awarded him the MacArthur Fellowship. Both the Russel Lectureship and Award were created in 1925 by a bequest from Henry Russel of Detroit who received three degrees from the University. The award winners are nominated to the University Board of Regents by the Committee on the Henry Russel Awards. The lectureship winners are nominated by the Council of the Research Club and a committee of former Russel lecturers. "I want to apologize to the peo- ple I represent - my constituents - for any embarrassment I may Davis made stops across the Upper Peninsula yesterday, talking to reporters and constituents in Ironwood, Menominee, Escanaba, Cheboygan and Marquette about the troubled House bank. He met with constituents in the northern Lower Peninsula on Monday.. said he lived paycheck to paycheck, blamed sloppy record keeping at the bank for most of the overdrafts. "To the public, it doesn't make a difference if Bob Davis had 878 bad checks or 92 or 20," Davis said. "It's still wrong and I admit that. But the figures are wrong." "Nevertheless, I take full re- sponsibility for this, as I must," Conyers said. Meanwhile in Washington, a spokesperson for the U.S. attor- ney's office said the government has opened a criminal investigation of activity at the House bank. 1.
