Women skiers take eighth at nationals
by Meg Belson
Daily Sports Writer
The Michigan women's ski team
battled inclement conditions and a
field of predominately varsity teams
to come away from the National
meet in Lake Placid, N.Y. with an
eighth-place finish last week.
Sixteen teams competed in the
meet, along with several individual
racers. Each run included about 80
skiers.
The Wolverines worked hard all
week to raise enough funds to make
the trip, and they said that their re-
suits at the meet made their efforts
worthwhile.
"We were all real happy with
how we finished," rookie Amy
Portenga said. "We all stood up and
we all finished."
Captain Lisa Witty, the lone se-
nior on the team, was the top
Wolverine finisher in both the
slalom (21st) and giant slalom
(38th).
"I was excited," Witty said. "I
wanted to be in the top 15, but I was
happy with 21st in the slalom."
The ski team placed 10th in the
giant slalom despite horrendous
conditions. The first race of the giant
slalom took place on Wednesday in
pouring rain. Trenches had to be dug
in the hill to drain water away from
the runs.
"It was the most miserable day
racing," Witty said.
Finishing behind Witty in the gi-
ant slalom was Portenga in 45th,
rookie Kelly Copeland in 49th, ju-
nior Amy Gray in 57th, and junior
Sara MacKeigan in 65th.
Conditions shifted before the
slalom race on Friday, but the
changes were not all for the better. A
cold front moved in Wednesday
night which brought about four
inches of snow before Friday.
"There was water all over the
hill," Portenga said. "It was a big
sheet of ice."
"It was one extreme to the other,"
Witty added. "It was more skiable,
but very icy."
The Wolverines did their best to
overcome the slippery conditions in
the slalom, capturing seventh place.
After Witty, MacKeigan took 31st,
with Portenga right behind in 34th.
Gray took 45th, while Copeland was
unable to race her second run due to
illness.
