The Michigan Daily - Monday, March 16, 1992- Page 7 Speaker criticizes .Democrats for weak candidates by Scott Roush Daily Staff Reporter Peter Brown, a journalist, spoke to students at the Union last night :bout Minority Party, his book *,which assails the Democratic party ;,for losing the stronghold they had on politics during the last 25 years. Speaking to a largely Democratic audience, Brown criticized the party For losing the crucial "swing vote" the non-partisan 18 to 25 percent of the population which is needed to win the presidential election. Brown said "Republicans have adjusted better to changes" in the country. He added that Democrats still feel "liberal guilt" and they need to concentrate on the economic growth of the country. LSA senior Jon Polish said, "I Agree with the majority of his argu- nent, but I'm not completely con- vinced about his thesis." He dis- agreed with Brown that Democrats themselves are at fault fojr losing the presidency. Brown said there are three things that the voters want from a presi- dent: a person who can manage the economy, be a strong commander- in-chief and who has the same moral values as the public. He also said Democrats have had no candidates in the past who could be strong on foreign policy. Brown said Bill Clinton best exemplifies his ideal Democratic candidate. In his book, Brown said the northeastern part of the country is no longer the center of the country. The southern states are more representa- tive of the typical voter and the Democrats have failed to recognize the change, he added. Brown also said, "The Republicans know how to use tele- vision, while Democrats are kids by comparison." He brought up exam- ples during the 1988 presidential campaign when Michael Dukakis appeared weak on television because of his lack of response to charges against him, and President Bush showed confidence about the issues. Some students said the Democrats need to show the faults of the Reagan and Bush presidencies. Polish said, "It's impossible for the Republicans to have a monopoly on emotional issues such as the Willie Horton incident or the flag- burning controversy." While Brown agreed that an issue about values and ethics would be good for the Democrats to use against the Republicans, he believed the Democrats need to focus on eco- nomic growth in order to win back the White House. The meeting was sponsored by College Democrats, LSA-student government and MSA. Ring around the collar Sen.
