Ice Hockey Tonight and Tomorrow, 7:30 p.m. vs. Ohio State Yost Ice Arena SPORTS Men's Basketball Tomorrow, 1 p.m. vs. Illinois Crisler Arena The Michigan Daily Cag ers shooting f-.ror 20th ,Victory by Matthew Dodge Daily Basketball Writer The Michigan basketball team loves to flirt. It comes on strong one day, making the pulse of Dick Vitale and other fans race (see Indiana). Then it turns ice cold another, break- ing the hearts of admirers (see Wisconsin). The Wolverines (10-7 Big Ten, 19-8 overall) have been sufficiently friendly with the basketball world to ensure an invitation from that desir- able debutante, the NCAA Tour- nament Selection Committee. The next order of business on coach Steve Fisher's agenda is to reach the magical 20-victory plateau. Michigan can clinch a reservation at a posh NCAA restaurant (read: high tournament seed) by rejecting - Illinois in the season finale tomor- row (Crisler Arena, 1 p.m.). See CAGERS, Page 12 Friday, March 13,1992 Page 7 Blue falls to Illinios, 78-67 'M' women's basketall done in by Illini foul shooting by Tim Spolar Daily Basketball Writer The Michigan women's basket- ball team extended its losing streak to four games last night, dropping its second-to-last game of the sea- son at Illinois, 78-67. The Wolverines (4-13 Big Ten, 7-20 overall) shook off the shock of the 41-point drubbing they suffered at the hands of Penn State Sunday and came out firing in the first half. However, Illinois' 27 to six advan- tage on foul shots made was the difference in the game. Michigan, which held a 36-33 advantage at the intermission, was paced by Nikki Beaudry's 16 first- half points. The junior forward nailed seven of 10 shots from the floor in addition to two of three from the charity stripe, and hauled down seven rebounds for good measure. Beaudry continued to have the hot hand in the second half, finishing with personal career highs in both scoring (24) and re- bounding (12). "Beaudry had a tremendous game, and I felt she really kept them in the game," Illini head coach Kathy Lindsey said. "We had three or four different people trying to guard her just hoping to slow her down." Unfortunately for Michigan, Trish Andrew, the Wolverines' sea- son leader in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and steals, could not get on track. Held to five of 16 shooting, the standout forward suffered at the hands of Illinois' outstanding indi- vidual defensive efforts. "You really have to credit Sonya (Waters) and Cindy (Dilger) for doing a good job defensively forc- ing Trish outside," Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege said. The inability of Michigan to uti- lize its go-to player - Andrew - caught up to the Wolverines as the game wore on. Michigan led by ten with just over four minutes to play in the first half. However, in those final four minutes and the first six of the second stanza, Illinois outscored the Wolverines by a 23-4 run. "I felt the biggest factor was that starting stretch of the second half," VanDeWege said. "They picked up their man-to-man defense and really took us out of a lot of plays. Again, Illinois' defense took the game and turned it around." MICHIGAN (67) Mt.. 4-A UA 0-T A FPt.
